The usual loud personalities of a few of the boys had dwindled away. Only the sound of leaves crunching under the weight of worn shoes and the chirping of birds could be heard. They dragged their feet and squinted their eyes as the sun beat down on them, quietly following the newest member of their group.
No one had spoken about what had happened, each of them scared to bring up unwanted emotions. Each of them had similar thoughts in their minds, was it their fault? could they have done something to prevent it from happening? what if it could have been them instead? why wasn't it them? They weren't sure how to comfort one another, as they all thought they were at fault in some way, and instead were the ones that needed to be comforted.
It wasn't fair, none of it was. Why did any of this have to happen to them? why did it have to happen when they were still so young with their whole lives yet to live?
Another day had passed by slowly and the sun was setting. The group decided to set up camp in a small clearing in the forest, the surrounding area being clear enough of zombies for them to feel safe sleeping in the open. They didn't have anything to sleep on or anything to keep them warm so they decided to build a fire. Jihoon and Vernon collected sticks and small tree branches and created a little pile in the middle of their makeshift campsite. They leant the sticks up against one another. The pair struggled for a while to light a flame but eventually sighed in relief when a spark ignited, they blew on the barely alive flame until it spread to the rest of the sticks and branches, growing into a larger and hotter flame.
They all decided it would be best for a few of them to take shifts staying awake and keeping watch for zombies while the others slept. Y/n's eyes were heavy and her body was severely fatigued, her limbs, especially her leg, hurting. Her half lidded eyes scanned the bodies around her, them landing on Mingyu who was sat up against a tree, resting his head against it. She walked over to him, trying to hide her limp, and the closer she got she noticed his red eyes and his tear stained cheeks.
Over the time that she spent with the group, she noticed that Mingyu and Wonwoo were always together whenever they were all at the warehouse. Any time she would see Wonwoo smile it would always be when he was around the other male.
She felt her heart sink at the sight of the usually cheerful male. She sat down next to him, scooting closer to him so she could rest her head on his chest and wrap her arms around him. He gladly accepted her into his arms and gently placed his arms over her shoulders.
"I'm sorry..." her was voice was muffled against his chest, it breaking slightly as she held back tears. He squeezed her shoulders and tightened his embrace around her.
"i'm sorry too" he replied, his eyes glossing over as he held back tears of his own.The pair quickly fell asleep, too exhausted, mentally and physically, to stay awake any longer. Most of the group had also fallen asleep as well, with only Seungcheol, Vernon and Soonyoung wide awake, being the first ones to keep watch for the night. Soonyoung was sitting down with one leg propped up. He was using the blade in his hand to create a shiv out of stick, also using the stick to sharpen his blade. Every now and then his eyes would wander over the sleeping bodies, checking to make sure everyone was safe, his eyes lingering on Mingyu and Y/n a little longer than the rest.
Seungcheol observed him from a far, contemplating whether now was a good time to talk to him or not. He stood up from his previous position against a tree and walked over to the white haired male. The said male looked up at hearing him approach him, he glanced at him and looked back down, continuing sharpening his blade. Seungcheol sat down next to him, copying the position he had his legs in.
The air around them was uncomfortably tense. Seungcheol stayed silent, his eyes trained on Soonyoung's blade etching into the stick in his hand. Soonyoung tried to ignore his eyes on him but ultimately couldn't,
"did you need something?" he asked, stopping what he was doing but refusing to the look at the dark haired male. He tried not to sound rude when he spoke but it was hard considering his relationship with him, or lack there off. He felt uncomfortable being around him in general, let alone sitting next to him when everyone else was asleep, knowing he wouldn't be able to avoid conversing with him.Seungcheol cleared his throat, his pride trying to prevent him from speaking.
"i'm sorry" he mumbled out, his voice barely audible. Soonyoung thought he heard him right but wasn't sure, considering an apology seemed uncharacteristic of him.
"what?" he asked, wanting the male to repeat what he said and explain why he was sorry in first place. Seungcheol mentally sighed and straightened his back,
"I'm sorry" he said louder this time. Soonyoung finally raised his head and his eyes locked with Seungcheol's. His gaze was firm and a little tense. Seungcheol broke their eye contact and looked away,
"I'm sorry for how I acted when we first met, I care a lot about my sister and I would do anything to protect her, but after watching you for a while I realised that you care a lot about her too and that she cares a lot about you as well, and I know it must be hard having to look after so many other people as well, so thank you for taking care of Y/n when I wasn't able to" he finished, his eyes fixated on a patch of grass on the ground.Soonyoung stared at him for a few seconds, searching his face for sincerity,
"I forgive you" he said, not knowing what else to say. He didn't exactly like the male but he didn't hate him. It was really hard looking after so many people and to be honest he wasn't sure he was doing a very good job. He gaze flickered back over to Y/n who was asleep against Mingyu's chest. He was scared, he didn't want to loose anyone else he cared about. But he knew life wasn't fair, especially the life they were living now, and that scared him so much.
