I had volunteered to do the washing of the laundry this time down by the creek, taking the time to think about what Daryl had said. He was probably right. This world, it was different now. Sure, Charlotte grew up in a house with guns and she knew most things like gun safety. But she'd never operated one before. I knew I wanted to speak to Shane about how he had talked to my daughter. I mean, our daughter...I looked up from the laundry to see him with Carl and Charlotte in the water on the other side of the pond. Shane was doing as he had promised with the kids and that was to teach them how to catch frogs. Seeing him foolishly playing with them, splashing in the water with buckets. Hearing Charlotte and Carl's laughter softened me. I missed this. Simple life. The kids laughing and Shane being the great Dad I knew he could be. I started thinking maybe it was just a big misunderstanding.
I chuckled and walked up with Jacqui and Andrea to get more laundry to do, bringing it back down to the water.
"I'm beginning to question the division of labor here." Jacqui pointed out. "Can someone explain to me how the women wound up doing all the Hattie McDaniel work?"
"The world ended. Didn't you get the memo?" Amy joked.
"It's just the way it is." Carol said and I noticed her looking up at Ed as he was watching us.
I felt bad knowing this was probably the way her life was before the world ended.
"I miss my Benz." Andrea admitted and we all looked at her.
"I do miss my Maytag." Carol agreed.
"Me too." I smiled at her and nudged her shoulder with a chuckle.
"I miss my Benz, my SAT NAV." Andrea droned.
"I miss my coffee maker." Jacqui mentioned. "With that dual drip filter and built in grinder, honey."
"Oh that's a good one." I agreed. I missed having a good cup of coffee every morning.
"My computer." Amy said. "Texting."
"I miss my vibrator." Andrea admitted out loud.
"Oh my god." Amy laughed.
The rest of us chuckled slightly.
"Me too." Carol admitted making us all laugh even harder.
"What's so funny?" Ed asked as he walked down toward us. All of our laughter was quickly diminished.
"Just swapping war stories, Ed." Andrea said.
Ed stood closer to us all and simply watched as we did the laundry. The closer he got to Carol, was closer to me and it made me uncomfortable having him over my shoulder.
"Have a problem, Ed?" I asked.
"None that concerns you. You ought to focus on your work. This ain't no comedy club." Ed remarked and he was starting to get under my skin. Carol glanced at me, begging me to let it go.
I let out a breath and gave her a look, letting her know I'd indeed let it go. When I looked back up, Lori was ushering Carl away from the water and quickly began an argument with Shane about something that I couldn't hear. Charlotte stood there awkwardly for a minute before she stumbled up the rocks and headed after Carl. How dare they fight in front of her like she doesn't even exist? Lori got in Shane's face and started pushing him angrily about something.
"They've been fightin' a lot lately." Amy whispered to me. "Kept going off alone while you were gone too."
"Yeah. I'm starting to realize that." I whispered back with a slight frown.
