LIZZY'S POV

She didn't care if there would be any penalty for this. She was in a whirlwind of emotions. She simply couldn't understand why everything was like this. She couldn't understand why virtually everything was against her. Swerving right, she hit the accelerating pedal and sped into the asphalt.

The speedometer now read 85 kilometers per hour. She prayed silently that no unlucky fellow would come out from nowhere and run into the car. She continued to race away, hoping on the presumption.

The way I drove the car was heartstopping. So, indeed, was the way I presumed myself to look, with the wind making my head wave.

Everything about me was alive, angry and bitter! I looked down to the map displayed right in front of me and saw that I was still far away. Not wanting to be late, I stepped on it again and watched as trees sped past.

Most men thought of me as spirited and enchanting. A number of women, on the other hand, tended to be less charitable, either out of envy or, perhaps, because they saw in me the wild, spontaneous, and slightly dangerous woman their mothers had cautioned them against.

Whether from admirers or detractors, however, I always attracted attention, and a second look. The tears and emotional aches had solidified into defiance. Men would always be men. I didn't attribute anything to hard luck because I never believed in it.

Today, though, given the breathtaking speed with which maneuvered the sleek convertible around the curves of Greenville, even the most observant person would have gotten no more than a brief glimpse.

I was driving substantially faster than the posted limits, but I was in a hurry, and it was part of my nature to assume traffic laws were more in the nature of suggestions.

Just past the Salvatrucha, where the abandoned roller coaster stood as one of the last remnants of better days. That was when my car came to a halt. I tried to restart the car but it wouldn't.

I came down and cursed under my breath, wondering what was wrong. Why had this car suddenly gone gaga when I needed it the most. Not knowing a single thing about fixing car problems, I went back inside hoping that it would fix itself.

Thankfully, it did. I sighed with relief as I got in and slammed the door. I began again to race down the tarmac, taking glances of the map occasionally.

I was nearing a T-junction and I had to slow down. I tried the brake but it didn't work. Thinking I didn't match on it very well, I stepped on it with the anger and fury that I had been holding within me. Yet, nothing happened.

Fear, panic. The sort that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up and tingle made me freeze. I stared at the facade as a pang of panic struck my belly. "Fuck!" I swore as I matched on the brake pedal again and again.

What the hell was wrong?! What the hell was happening to the damn car. Cold sweat trickled down my breast when I saw a truck careening across the road. "Oh my God!" I was already getting teary as I neared the truck. It was carrying petroleum.

My tears were now beginning to gather and I was about to let out a scream as I watched myself race towards the gigantic car, unable to stop the car. I was about to utter a scream when I jerked from my sleep, panting.
