Chapter Twenty Three
The Parents

(Nobody's Pov!)

Mackenzie stared in shock as the two approached her. She felt small and insignificant just like when she was a child.

"Hello, MacKenzie. We just heard the news about our daughter becoming a criminal and an enemy of the country." Emily's mother spoke, glaring at MacKenzie. Mackenzie stared at the two of them in silence as they spoke again.

"I knew her coming here with you would cause nothing, but trouble. It's absolutely a shame what you've done to our precious little girl." Emily's mother spoke, her hands on her hips. She continued to berate her while Mackenzie just stayed quiet. It was happening all over again just like before. Throughout MacKenzie's childhood Emily's parents had always picked on Mackenzie. Mackenzie was a freak, she wasn't smart enough, she was fat, or that her teeth weren't perfectly white. Things that weren't true they made up for some reason. Mackenzie felt as if she was a disgusting person. A bad influence. Maybe she was responsible for Emily's traitorous behavior.

Mackenzie tried to utter a response, but nothing would come out. She spent years of her life trying to become strong and confident, but people from her past made her feel weak and insignificant again. Mackenzie's heart was racing as she tried to find the words.

"Patricia, You can't be surprised. Her parents made her this way." Emily's father said, smirking confidently as he watched Mackenzie's confidence shrink.

"You're right." Patrica said, her arms folded over her chest as she glared at Mackenzie.

"I.. I'm sorry. I tried my best to help her." Mackenzie spoke, her heart crushed. She thought of her parents who tried their best. After all they died when she was young, how could they influence her?

"This is just pathetic. You're not fit to be a hero. You're a disappointment and a failure of a cousin and a niece." Patricia said, her eyebrows furrowing as she raised her arm up, preparing to slap Mackenzie.

All of a sudden someone large grasped Patrica's wrist, stopping her from laying her hands on Mackenzie. Patricia looked over her shoulder in rage at whoever had stopped her. That's when her eyes widened, her heart stopping as she stared into flaming orange eyes.

"Hey! Get your hands off my wife!" Bob yelled, stepping towards Philip. Philip raised an eyebrow and stared down at the man who was much shorter than him. Don't get me wrong Emily's dad was average height for a man, but Philip was at least six foot four. He towered above Emily's father height wise and absolutely decimated him in muscle size.

"You're wife was about to lay her hands on a hero. That's illegal, but maybe you aren't familiar with the law." Philip said, letting go of Patrica's wrist.

"Y-you.. well.. no I wasn't going to hit her. I was just making a point." Patricia stuttered, extremely small compared to Philip. She was rather short and chubby with her hair in a tight bun.

"I watched you guys for awhile and what you said is just wrong. You're wrong in every way. Mackenzie did everything she could for your daughter and so did this school. Emily made her own choice. Yeah, she may have been influenced by a piece of shit asshole, but I can assure you that Mackenzie did everything in her power to save Emily." Philip said, standing tall and protectively in front of Mackenzie. Mackenzie's eyes widened as Philip spoke. He was defending her.. he was just as powerful and confident as always.

"You have no idea how hard she works. You have no right to come here and make fun of her and tear her down. You can get the hell out of here and never come back." Philip growled, through gritted teeth. His fists were clenched tightly as small flames danced off his shoulders, the smoke floating up around him. Emily's parents shrank down and their confidence disappeared as they lowered their heads. They were furious, but they were powerless. They hung their heads and left the school, leaving Mackenzie standing there in shock. Philip turned around to look at Mackenzie, his flames dying down as he stared into her sweet blueish green eyes.
