Chapter Twelve
Who You Wanna Be

(Nobody's POV!)

"Yes, yes, shut up. I know you're all excited about this, but I actually need to speak in order to tell you more, idiots." Duke said, facepalming. The Students instantly quieted down and sat politely in their seats in front of Duke.

"We're finally at the point in the year where you can start thinking about what type of hero you want to be. There are a lot of branches and various teams that you can go into or you could become strong enough to start your own group or branch." Duke explained.

"There are various rescue groups, medic groups, defensive groups, offensive groups. They're all run by elite heroes that you'll eventually meet." Duke said, sitting on his desk in front of the class.

"Mr. Washington, Why didn't you become an elite hero? Why are you a teacher?" Liliana asked, leaning her head on her palm.

"Teaching you brats is more helpful." Duke responded, shortly. He didn't need to get into his personal feelings with a student.

"He must just be weak." Liliana giggled quietly to another classmate. Duke rolled his eyes and kept reaching, ignoring Liliana's behavior.

"Do you think he even has powers?" Liliana asked, leaning towards another classmate. May looked over at Liliana with an sad expression.

"Maybe he got someone killed and he had to quit!" She giggled as the other classmates giggled.

'Why is Liliana so mean?' May thought you herself. She fidgeted with her fingers while listening to Liliana continue to bad mouth Duke.

That's when suddenly a chain came whipping across the room, smacking Liliana's book off her desk. Liliana gasped and looked up as the large shadow cast over her. Duke stared down at her with clenched fists.

"Why did you dad retire? Is it because he's weak? Is it because he doesn't have powers? Or is it because he got someone killed?" Duke asked, staring daggers at Liliana. His aura had everyone in the class trembling. Even Philip was unnerved by this man's presence. He exuded rage and hate from his body and it made everyone shiver.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Washington." Liliana muttered, putting her head down. Duke sighed and walked back to the front of the room. He couldn't stand preppy bitches. He wasn't here to be their friend. He was here to correct and teach them so they don't die immediately.

The bell finally rung, signaling the end of class. Duke waved all of the students out as he sat down at his desk. He pressed his hand to his face and sighed. 'Being a hero is a lot harder than these kids think.' He thought to himself, watching them leave. They were all talking and laughing together as they left. They didn't even know the horrors that were waiting for them out in the real world.

Duke couldn't stop himself from thinking about it. He promised himself that he wouldn't think about it anymore, but it was impossible to erase from his mind. It happened and that's why he's this way.

(Flashback!)

"Come on!" Lucinda gasped, grabbing Sei's hand as they rushed across the battlefield.

"Be careful we don't know what we're up against yet." Duke said, brushing his hair out of his eyes as he ran. "Don't worry! We've got this! Never stop being positive!" Gabriel said, smiling at his friends.

"I don't know. We lost communication with the other team. We're rookies. We don't have a chance if the pros failed." Sei said, looking over at Lucinda's frightened expression.
