Chapter Twenty Six
A Warrior's Defeat

(Nobody's Pov!)

"Mackenzie? You haven't shown up for training in awhile." Maddie said, walking beside Mackenzie as they headed to the cafeteria.

"I've been doing a different type of training with Miss Ember. It's working for me just fine. Don't worry, Maddie." Mackenzie said, smiling at her friend. Mackenzie wasn't necessarily lying, but she still couldn't summon her scythe. That didn't stop Mackenzie from working out and training her body. The ice stayed cold and it made her body ache, but that didn't mean she could quit. She needed to stay in shape if she was going to kill The Phoenix.

"That's pretty cool! I've been working with Lucinda and Eleanor a lot. They're really helping me with everything. Lucinda said my powers might adapt when I need them the most." Maddie said, smiling over at Mackenzie.

"That's Great. I'm sure you're going to be an amazing hero in the future." Mackenzie said, smiling at her short red headed friend.

"Yeah! We're going to be amazing heroes. I can't wait to become an elite hero with you so we can design awesome uniforms!" Maddie said, excited to grow up. Mackenzie nodded and kept walking while Maddie kept talking about the future. Mackenzie was happy that Maddie was happy, but the future was bittersweet. Would Mackenzie even have a future? Could she hold off on using her scythe?

Suddenly an alarm rang out causing the two girls to jump. They looked around frantically as they noticed heroes storming out of the school.

"What's going on?" Maddie gasped, spinning around in a circle to look at all the heroes bursting out of the school.

"It must be another attack." Mackenzie said, her heart racing as she heard the announcement. She knew they had to go defend the city. She quickly rushed back to her dorm to suit up and head out.

Philip arrived at the target area before his friends. He was planning on meeting with some of the elite heroes that were stationed at the city. He turned down the road his eyes immediately locking onto the blood on the sidewalk. He cautiously turned the corner only to be met with a massacre. There were dead civilians and heroes all over the street.

Severed limbs and chunks of flesh covered the road and sidewalks. There were splatters of blood all over the sides of the buildings and puddles of it in the street.

Philip stared in shock as he walked down the desolate road, unable to process what he was seeing. Was this some sort of trap? Should he leave and warn the others or search for survivors? He wasn't sure what the best course of action was. That's when he heard feet rushing towards him. Philip spun around, his fists raised, ready to attack. He gasped as he was met with a tight hug. He paused for a moment before looking down, spotting Leo.

"Leo? You shouldn't be here." Philip said, as Leo backed off. Leo had a long red cape on his back and a fancy little mask on his face.

"Mr pebble! It's bad! I tried to help, but there were so many villains!" Leo said, tears in his eyes as he stared up at Philip. Philip took a deep breath as he looked around at the massacre before him.

"Let's get you out of here." Philip said, trying to push Leo along, but Leo was struggling against him.

"No! We have to fight those villains, Pebble!" Leo said, his fists clenched tightly as he tried to march down the street.
