Bucky's POV:
I liked Steve's Office. It was fairly simple, not too many pictures or personal effects, but enough to make sure that the space felt personal. Sometimes Steve called me in here just for a quiet chat or even a gossip away from super-human ears. He had even helped me to organize the proposal in this office, so normally I wasn't too nervous about being called in here.
Today, that was not the case.
"Morning, Buck." He greeted me, focusing on something on one of the monitor screens.
I sat down in the chair across from his desk, "Hey,"
"So," Steve began, cutting straight to the chase, as he often did when in his 'working mindset', "We have the details for a new mission." He continued.
I sighed.
"But I wanted to run them through you and check a couple of things before I assigned you to it since, you know, your last mission didn't exactly run smoothly.
Ah yes. The month I spent starving in a Russian forest while my (secretly) pregnant soon-to-be-fiancée had a mental-break-down since she couldn't talk to anybody about losing me. -That mission.
"Yeah, if I'm remembering it correctly, it was less than ideal."
Steve let out a small chuckle. Prick. "Exactly. Fury dropped in to make sure I was 'up-to-date on the re-introduction protocol' and he said that I need to assess your physical and mental abilities over the next week before I can sign you off for field work."
"You know I can tick those boxes so let me just go ahead with the mission, it'll be fine."
"HYDRA have kidnapped two Avengers in the past six months."
"That's not the point." I combated, shaking my head a little, "I don't care what the mission is but I want to be on it."
Steve ran his hand down his face, "I know, but it's not been long since you were away and I need to make sure that you're ready to go back to combat."
"Alright, fine." I conceded, "What's the assignment anyway?"
Steve turned back to the screen and clicked a couple of buttons before speaking again, "It's just recon so you should be fine. There's a base that was abandoned about a month ago. We've had a station around it for the past week to make sure there was nobody going in or out but we want to send you and me in for the inside sweep."
A smile pulled at my cheeks, "That should be fine, don't worry about me."
It had been too long since I had been on a more simple mission where nothing would go wrong, and even longer since I had been on a solo mission with Steve.
"Ok, well I'll come and check up on you while you spar with somebody or something over the next few days."
I nodded, "I was actually going to head down to the gym and get some training done anyway, want to join me?" I leaned back as I asked him while he went back to opening files or something.
"I wish I could, Buck, but I have a ton of paperwork to do." He responded, shaking his head slightly.
I picked up a pen off his desk and inspected it while I asked, "What paperwork?"
"Do you remember last week when Tony was trialing some new suits?"
"Yes..." I responded cautiously, the memories slowly coming back to me.
"Then I guess you remember him making a suit for JARVIS to 'wear'," He mumbled while typing something.
I nodded again.
"And how that particular suit flew up to Washington where it danced the macarena in front of The White House before exploding..."
Yep, that would cause a fair bit of paperwork. "I'll leave you to it then." I said, standing up and replacing the pen in its pot.
"Later, Buck." Steve called as I exited the room and headed for the gym.
As my fists pummelled the bag in front of me, a thought popped into my head: Y/n/n.
I knew for a fact that she would not want me going on another mission this soon, if ever. I had to tell her, but it wouldn't go down well. At all.
I could understand her hesitance, fuck, even I was a little nervous to leave her but I needed to go. This was my job and, believe it or not, sometimes I actually enjoyed what I did.
I don't know how long I was in there alone before I heard the latch of the door click, but when it did, I heard Y/n/n's sweet voice fill the room.
"Hey, Buck!"
I turned around to see her in a matching light-purple set of leggings and a sports bra, She would probably have called the color 'Lavender'. In the outfit, her baby bump was clearly visible and I greeted both her and the baby with a light kiss. "Good morning, Doll. Did you sleep alright?"
Her soft gaze hardened. "You're keeping something from me."
Of course, she would notice straight away.
I took her hand in mine, tracing my fingers over the ring that now permanently adorned my fiancée's finger. My fiancée.
"There's a mission-"
"No." She interrupted, her stance stiffening.
"It's not even overnight, it's an abandoned base, they've been watching it all week." I explained, tucking a loose piece of hair from her ponytail and tucking it behind her ear.
"No, Bucky. Last time... Just no." Her voice was uncharacteristically shaky and I knew what was about to happen. Since her pregnancy had begun, the tears had been quick to fall. I didn't blame her, but I hated to be the cause of them.
"Look, Y/n/n." I said, pressing another gentle kiss to her lips before pulling her into my arms. "It'll be fine, don't worry. Okay?"
"I don't want you to go." She whispered into my chest, her voice barely audible.
"I know, I know but it's going to be okay. I'll be back before you know it."
Feeling a tiny nod against my chest, I held her even tighter in my embrace.
"I love you so much, okay?"
"I love you too." She mumbled into me.
"Keep the apricot safe for me." I whispered into her head.
"Apricot?" she asked, pulling herself away from me a little.
I chuckled, "I read something that said that at ten weeks, the baby is as big as an apricot."
A smile finally formed on Y/n/n's face. "I like that."
I pressed my lips to her forehead before she quickly began to glare at me again.
"But if you're not there at my twelve-week scan, I'll-"
"I'll be there, Doll. Don't worry."
