Y/n's POV:

"Please, Tony. We can't disrupt his life again." I begged as Buck and I sat on the plush chairs of Tony's office, yet again a united front, only this time we weren't battling a couples therapist but one of our teammates.

"I don't want to get rid of him any more than you two do, but legally, we cannot keep him here. He should go into the foster system"

"The farthest he's gotten with his English is 'I want chocolate'. We can't send him off to live with strangers he can't communicate with." Buck fought back.

"I know," Tony sighed, "but we can't let him stay. Fuck, he doesn't even have his own room, he's sleeping on the floor of yours."

"Exactly." I retorted. "Vanya's comfortable here. We can't uproot that, this isn't exactly a normal situation."

Please, universe, make him understand.

"Just because we're Avengers doesn't mean we can run loose with the law, especially not concerning child safeguarding."

"Oh yeah, and that's why you kidnapped a teenager without a passport and flew him to Germany." Buck answered.

Tony sighed again, flexing his fingers before bringing them back to form a fist. "None of us are licensed foster carers and you two are going to have a baby in under six months, which we still haven't figured out because this isn't exactly a child-friendly environment." he said, mumbling the last bit under his breath.

"Please, Tony."

"Where is he going to get an education?" Tony argued, "There aren't any schools around, this isn't exactly the city center. He needs to socialize with other children."

"Let's at least teach him to say hello first." I cut in.

"I understand you care about him bu-"

"Obviously." Bucky and I muttered simultaneously.

This is getting nowhere. Thanks a lot, universe.

Tony was tired, I was tired, Buck was tired. We all just wanted this to be over.

"What do we have to do for Vanya to stay? Can we adopt him?"

"I don't think you would meet the criteria given the criminal charges." He told us, looking defeated.

"Buck was pardoned, and technically I was working under a branch of the Government..."

"Do you really think this is a safe environment for a child?" Tony asked, "Honestly?"

We both sighed, feeling defeated. "There has to be something we can do?" I begged, "I don't want him to feel alone."

"I'll see what I can do." He mumbled, gesturing to the door.

As soon as it closed behind us I found myself in Buck's arms with tears rolling down my face. This wasn't fair.

"Shhh, It's okay. I know, I know." He whispered, "I want to keep him too."

Fuck pregnancy. Fuck the hormones. Fuck Tony. Fuck the law.

"I know, it sucks." Bucky mumbled into the top of my head.

"Did I say that out loud?"

"Did you not mean to?"

"Shit," I said with a small chuckle. "Why can't this all sort itself out? I don't like it."

That made Bucky laugh too. "Hopefully, it will."

"I'm not hopeful." I answered.

We stood there for a few more minutes before I felt a peck on my forehead and Buck slipped his hand into mine.

"Let's go get lunch."
