Bucky's POV:

The closer I got to the entrance I had got in through, the more I could hear. What was going on? Was Steve ok? Were they gunshots? Nobody had been here when we had arrived...

A tapping on my shoulder brought me out of my stream of worrying thoughts. "Что такое Стив?" (What is (a) Steve?)

I sighed, not slowing my run, "Стив - это имя моего лучшего друга." (Steve is the name of my best friend) I clarified. "Он тоже здесь" (He's here too.)

I heard a crash and my anxiety began to spike but then Vanya asked another question.  "лучший друг?" (Best friend?)

"Uhhh..." I began, trying to figure out where to go and answer his question at the same time "У меня их двое - Стив и Y/n/n. Мои любимые люди, люди, без которых я не могу жить. Они - те, кто мне нужен для счастья." (I have two of them, Steve and Y/n/n. My favorite people, people I can't live without. They are the people I need to be happy.)

"И я, да?" (And me, yes?) He questioned, making me chuckle a little.

"Да, и ты." (Yes, and you.)

He laughed, "Ты не мой лучший друг. Моя мама - мой лучший друг. Моя мама - мой любимый человек." (You're not my best friend. My mum is my best friend. My mum is my favorite person.)

My stomach sank but I didn't have time to think much further before the sound of bullets and people hitting the floor became clearer than ever.

I felt a hand wrap around my wrist and sharply yank us into some kind of supply cupboard, the door shutting firmly behind us, plunging us into darkness.

What the fuck?

"Buck? Why is there a child with you? Comms wasn't working very well earlier, I couldn't hear you properly." Steve's voice broke through the blackness.

"Ето Стив, Ваня." (This is Steve, Vanya) Vanya kept quiet, suddenly shy around the man who was a stranger to him. " Ваня?" (Vanya?)

"Bucky, I'll repeat my question. Why do you have a child with you?" Steve asked again.

I looked down at Vanya who was hiding his face in my shoulder and holding on tightly before getting closer to Steve and whispering in his ear. "I found him downstairs, his mother's...body was with him. I wasn't going to leave him there."

I could hear the sound of Steve's gear moving, presumably while he nodded his head in understanding.

"There's a team of people in the hallway just before the exit. They're not HYDRA, they're from somewhere else but I don't know where."

"Shit." I muttered.

Vanya lifted his head and whispered in my ear, giggling slightly. "Shit."

"Что?" (What?) I questioned.

"Shit. Fuck." He laughed again. The boy didn't know what chocolate was but he knew how to curse?

"Does he speak English?" Steve asked, his tone confused.

"Not as far as I'm aware." I told him truthfully. "How are we going to get past this group of people?" I wondered, "Do you know how many there are?"

"Maybe forty or fifty, like I said, I don't recognize the uniforms. I think they might have been the ones who attacked the base before, they were probably waiting not far from the base with someone on surveillance. How are we going to get the kid-"

"Vanya."

"Ok, how are we going to get Vanya past this?" Steve said, clearly running through plans in his head.

There was about a minute of silence while we ran through the possibilities, I didn't want to leave him in the cupboard, I didn't know if I even could with the way he was gripping onto my shoulders. I could feel each of his tiny fingers holding on for dear life, as if, despite not knowing what was going on, he was already scared I would abandon him.

"This is going to be practically impossible without backup isn't it?" I muttered.

"It's looking that way." Steve replied solemnly, "But we can't get a signal to each other, Let alone Tony."

"Shit." I mumbled under my breath, hearing the little boy repeat me soon after. "We're just going to have to try and get as close to the door as possible." I concluded. "That's got to be the only way."

"Ok, we'll get out, try and get as close to the exit as possible, and constantly radio for help." Steve's voice sounded resigned, even though we were trying to keep our voices as quiet as possible.

"That's our plan?"

"That's our plan."

Moments later, after quickly checking our weapons we re-opened the door and started moving towards the exit as quickly as possible. I wish I had some better way to protect Vanya as bullets began to fly towards us, attempting to cover his torso with as much of my metal hand as possible didn't feel like enough, but I couldn't do anything more with a gun in my other hand. Not a textbook use of the weapon, but it was as good as I could get.

A bullet clipped the top of my ear, earning a pair of "Shit!" -s from Vanya and me.

"Stark? Tony?" I heard Steve's voice from in front of me, trying to radio for help. I joined him.

I felt Vanya wince in my arms, pulling his leg in closer to his body. Fuck. No.

Then it occurred to me. How we had forgotten? I don't know.

"Steve! The Pebble!" I yelled, grabbing mine from the pocket I had kept it safe in, and watching Steve do the same.

I chucked it on the ground and stamped down as hard as I could, feeling a billet graze my calf not long after, we needed backup. And soon.
