Once upon a time, in the Orange Archipelago, a young man was on a journey to find himself. He had been isolated for so long from the world on the icy peak of Mt. Silver, training himself and his pokemon as hard as he could. So much so, that he stopped talking at all. He hadn't found much use in his voice since stepping down as champion of the Indigo league.

He had decided a change of scenery was needed, so he traveled to the islands, using his beloved Blastoise to traverse the waters. All the while, unaware that he had been watched and followed.

[Name] watched the young man from the water. Her friend, a vaporeon, always kept her company as she followed the man and his Blastoise. As soon as she had laid eyes on the man, [Name] was entranced. His dark hair and red eyes were mesmerizing to her, but he was still so mysterious.

He never would talk to anyone on land and would mostly keep to himself. The only interaction he would ever have was with his pokemon. [Name] would watch him be so attentive to his pokemon, treating them with such love and care. She was fairly sure his Blastoise knew about her presence as well, especially when Vaporeon got away from her and went to play with it while it was in the water away from its trainer.

The young man did know something was up though. He would notice his Blastoise had spurts of joy while they traveled the water. He could swear he saw a Vaporeon just under the waves. And he's sure he saw a glimpse of a burnt orange tail, far too big for any pokemon he'd known about, and the shape was unfamiliar to him as well.

[Name] wanted so badly to speak with him, but she couldn't. Who knows how he would react to seeing her? Not many humans knew about mermaids, and those who did primarily wanted to capture them for aquariums and shows. Normally, she did not trust any human, but this one seemed different to her. Maybe he was like her?

You see, mermaids can walk on land. Once they go onto land, their tails become legs. The catch is, once their tail is gone, so is their voice. [Name] had known few mermaids who had gone to live on the land, tired of constantly being chased by fishermen. Perhaps this man was a merman? And he did not swim in water in fear of being caught. [Name] had decided to finally show herself to him and find out.

The young man had stopped on a small island, only habited by pokemon. [Name] watched from a cluster of rocks as he set up a tent and let his pokemon out of those strange contraptions. The Vaporeon beside her started happily swimming in circles, waiting for the Blastoise to join it in the water. What neither of them expected was for the young man to follow his Blastoise toward the water, right near where the mermaid was hiding. She took a deep breath and smiled as the Blastoise approached her and Vaporeon. It nuzzled its head into her side, making her laugh.

There was a soft gasp. [Name] looked up, her eyes meeting the red ones she had never seen up close. They were more dazzling than she realized. She smiled softly and gave the man a small wave. "Hi there. Your Blastoise friend is very nice." She scratched the pokemon under its chin, and it keened happily before joining Vaporeon in some kind of game.

The young man kneeled down on the rock and started moving his hands. [Name] smiled. He knew sign language. Maybe he was a merman! "Are you a mermaid?" He signed. [Name] nodded, "Are you?" She asked. His eyes widened. [Name] laughed and grabbed the hand closest to her, tugging him into the water. [Name] dove under the water, excited to see what his tail would look like, but his legs were the same. Their eyes met underwater, but he didn't look angry. The young man just looked confused as he kicked back up to the surface.
