By all laws of high school, it was never meant to be. At least according to the students in their little bubbles. [Name] and Marnie, ran in separate circles. While Marnie liked to stay out of the way of some of the other groups and wasn't considered "cool", [Name] was actually quite popular.

[Name] could make friends with anyone she came across. She was pretty and smart and caring, and really everyone wanted to be with her. Her locker was always filled with love notes and confessions, and she would respond to everyone in kind... rejecting them. The one person she was hoping to see a love letter from never sent her one.

Marnie, however, liked to keep to herself. One could normally find her in the library with her headphones on and reading a book. She liked keeping to herself, but she was still popular in her own way. See, her brother is this big shot musician, and any fan of his was a fan of hers as well. They all saw her as their own little sister as well. Most people who dared to approach her usually got scared off by her "fans." That's why she was alone. Sometimes it was just easier.

But she Marnie did have eyes for someone. The only person in school who would stand up to her "fans." The only person who made Marnie's cheeks darken in color and make her eyes peek up from her book. Just like today.

Marnie was trying to read in the library as usual, headphones turned up to block out the sound of her "fans" trying to get her attention, and it was working. At least until there was a pause as the next song loaded up. That's when she heard that unmistakable voice.

"I just wanted to say hi to her!" [Name] exclaimed before apologizing to all the other library patrons. But no one cared, even Sonia, the librarian, wanted to see what was happening. Marnie's cheeks flushed as she lowered her book, just enough to get a glimpse of her crush.

I mean, who wasn't always so magnetically drawn to [Name]? Marnie appreciated the kindness that radiated from her, how she was willing to talk to anyone and everyone, regardless of their high school social standing. But [Name] had tried so hard to talk to Marnie. As soon as she the young girl with her nose in a book, humming along to a song, [Name]'s heart swooned. But there were these people who followed Marnie everywhere she went and wouldn't let anyone approach her.

[Name] had been able to speak to Marnie once, and only once. When Marnie saw [Name] approaching her before, she assumed it was to ask about her brother, but was pleasantly surprised when she blurted out, "That's my favorite book!" Before she got ushered away by Marnie fans. That book has been Marnie's backpack ever since.

"She's busy reading! Why don't you go bother someone else!?" One of the "fans" yelled, pointing toward the exit. [Name] scoffed and looked over, meeting Marnie's eyes. Marnie gasped, and [Name] smiled but quickly replaced it with a frown as she glared at the "fans." "Fine, can you at least give her this? It's for a school project, for her eyes only!" She offered a rolled up poster to one of them. "We would never look at Marnie's personal things!"

[Name] just nodded and walked over to a shelf of books, perusing its contents. Everyone else in the library also went back to minding their own business.

From her peripheral vision, [Name] watched the "fans" walk over and hand the rolled up poster to Marnie. "Did you do it?" Someone suddenly whispered next to her.

[Name] jumped a bit and glared at the person, her best friend Cecilia, who was trying to hold in a laugh. [Name] rolled her eyes but smiled. "They just gave it to her, you really think this will work?" she whispered. Her friend shrugged, "It's the only way you'll get close to her with those goons in the way." Cecilia looked around before leaning in, "You sure about this, though [Name]? She seems to like being alone, and you could have your pick of anyone here? Not me, though. I'm saving myself." [Name] rolled her eyes again, "Yea for a professor in another country. " "Yep!"
