Lucy hated Eustace Clarence Scrubb. But at least he didn't run off secretly to try and enlist in the British Army.
When she saw her brother handing the British general Aunt Alberta's documents, she didn't care whether she was embarrassing him or not.
"Alberta Scrubb?" Questioned the man in the booth, looking at Edmund with disbelief.
"That's a typographical error. It's supposed to be Albert A. Scrubb." He answered.
Lucy stomped her feet on the wooden floor. "Edmund," She corrected, raising her eyebrows. "You're supposed to be helping me with the groceries."
The boys on the line began laughing, one of them even punching Edmund's shoulder. "Better luck next time, eh, Squirt?" He mocked, pushing Edmund away. He grabbed his aunt's documents and got out of the centre.
Edmund was furious; not at Lucy, but at the boys in the line and at his aunt for having a stupid name. He knew he was supposed to be helping his sister, but the idea of going to war was so tempting he couldn't let this opportunity slip away. So while Lucy searched for carrots, Edmund quietly got out of the store and rushed to the enlistment centre.
He groaned, taking the wooden boxes from his sister's hands. "Squirt?! He barely had two years on me!" He grumbled, taking off his hat and oversized jacket. Lucy wanted to say he could've easily passed as an eighteen-year-old, but those oversized clothing ruined everything. But she kept quiet, deciding not to give him any more ideas.
The boy began walking towards the bike. "I'm a King!" He exclaimed, earning some weird looks from a man passing the street. "I've fought wars, I've led armies, and I'm even married!" He said, raising his finger with the silver alliance.
Lucy only laughed at his antics. "Not in this world." She told him, holding back her laughter.
"Yeah," He agreed, wrapping the belt around the wooden boxes. "Instead, I'm stuck here doing battle with Eustace Clarence Scrubb, if anyone deserved such a name."
The young girl tuned her brother off. At this point, she was more than used to hearing him complain about Eustace and Cambridge. Over his shoulder, a soldier leaned against a pillar, his arm over a girl's head as she laughed because of something he said.
She couldn't help the jealousy; Olivia had married one of her brothers, and Susan was constantly with boys running after her like lost puppies. Why didn't boys go after her too? Lucy watched as the girl tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, and the boy's cheeks grew red.
