"If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse."
- Holly Black, The Cruel Prince

Narnia, 1004

Time flies when one is happy.

For one year, Cair Paravel had been filled with joy and laughter. Several balls had been hosted by Queen Susan, which had attracted much attention from various Kingdoms. Many people attended, and the Narnians were making a lot of friendships.

Recently, they had been receiving a significant number of diplomats and royalty from several different places. Still, the one they had least expected was to receive a letter from the Tisroc announcing the soon arrival of his diplomats and eldest son.

The five Kings and Queens had rushed to the throne room, looking regal and intimidating, for they suspected the Calormenes were there to try a fight or a war.

Edmund was more than pissed. Apparently, the Tisroc had not understood the message he had sent the last time he met a Calormen. "Tell your ruler we shall let this pass. This time. If he gets caught in our lands, with his people doing any kind of illegal activity, I will personally make sure of his death, and that it is a very slow and agonising one. I will burn down his kingdom until it is nothing but ashes. Am I understood?"

Of course, Peter would never allow Edmund to kill Rabadash. But a threat can be made once in a while, of course. And Edmund always disobeyed Peter; why wouldn't this time be different? He might be High King, but he was still just a brother.

When the great doors of Cair Paravel were opened, the loud trumpet was blown, and Oreius the Centaur announced the arrival of the Calormenes and Rabadash, the Prince and first in line for the Calormene throne.

Rabadash was a tall and broad man with big shoulders and a muscular body. Unfortunately, his face wasn't pleasant to look at, with a very big nose and a large forehead.

" Greetings, oh, good monarchs. " He started, bowing and his diplomats. " I apologise for the sudden visit, but I hope your leader accepts our presence inside your castle walls. "

Peter was the only one to stand up from his throne, meaning the rest stayed seated as they quietly observed the scene.

" You are well received, Prince Rabadash. " Peter said as he went down the stairs. " I am High King Peter, the Magnificent. It is nice to meet you, and now tell me, what brings you to my Kingdom? "

" Thank you. I shall be direct, High King. " Rabadash took off his hat. He moved to stand to the side of Peter. " I am here in order to discuss the event of the last year, the one in the woods. "

" I see. " Peter signed.

" Well, which one of you do I have to talk to: You, High King, or your brother? "
