I instinctively touch the spot where the mark had been burned into me all those years ago. It had healed and disappeared when I'd turned but sometimes it's like I can still feel the pain.
"Lorelei?" A voice asks knocking me back into focus
I'm sitting on the couch in the living room with Nik sitting by my side. He moves to touch my hand and I instinctively jerk away.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to startle you." He says softly
"Sorry." I mutter
"What is it?"
"Just reliving a horrible childhood." I say trying to shake off the memory
"Want to talk about it?" He asksI sigh.
"Back when I was seven, Hector branded me for breaking one of the rules." I say
He stares at me in shock but I can see the anger in his eyes.
"What happened?"
I shrug.
"I had a book." I sayHe sits there seething but he looks like he's waiting for me to continue so I do.
"Hector thought learning to read was a waste of time so be forbid it. We were supposed to spend our time taking care of the pack. So my mom taught me how to read in secret and I loved it.
We read together or told stories every night.
Well one day they found the book my mom gave me and they burned it. I got so mad I bit him and he branded me as punishment." I say
Tears start welling up in my eyes and I blink trying to give them away.
I wished there were better stories I could tell him. Happy ones of me exploring the mountain and coming home every night to a warm meal and family time.
But that would be a lie.
Truth is, I never really had any happy memories from my childhood other than when my mother was alive. I can still hear her quietly cheering with excitement one night when I'd read the whole book to her slowly, page by page. I'd struggled but she waited for me to sound out each letter.
"Yay! Good job Lu!" She has said
My dad had walked in then interrupting the moment, exhausted from cutting firewood all day but he smiled when he saw me and Mom cuddled up together and celebrating.
"She read the whole book to me!" My mother had told him
He wrapped me in a big hug and then I read him the entire book, animal noises and all.
They died the next day.
Hector had opened my tent in the middle of the night. I had woken up alone and looked up at him.
"You're parents are gone. I'm all you have now." He had said
That night I snuggled up with my father's shirt and cried until finally, exhausted, I fell asleep.
