Chapter 45
"Annalise?"
"Shh, I'm right here Daniel."
"What happened?" Daniel asked, trying to sit up. I pushed him back down and smoothed his hair.
"Nothing. It's not important now."
"How long have I been out?"
"3 days."
"What?" He asked, trying to sit up again. I pushed him down once more, trying to calm him down.
"It's okay. You're all better now. And this isn't going to happen again."
"I'm going to kill Ryder."
"No you won't," I said, trying to calm him down. "He's out of the picture."
"Really?"
"Really."
"You don't know how happy I am to hear you say that." Daniel said, smiling.
I faked a smile back. "Yeah, I am too."
But really, I wasn't happy with the way things were going. I was still aggravated with Ryder, and I did want to punch him in the face a million times, but it also got pretty lonely. While Daniel was out, Sarah was the only one I could talk to, and it was a little awkward with her. It's hard to talk to someone who likes a boy that has kissed you. But I haven't exactly told her that yet. She knew something was up, but I doubt she knew everything that had happened in the past few days.
It was awkward with Ryder, too. He has tried to talk to me several times, but I've been giving him the silent treatment. Anyone who hurts my best friend isn't worth my time. After Daniel got hurt the other day, the teachers postponed the lessons between me and Ryder. They didn't cancel them, but they could tell I was about ready to rip his throat out.
I looked back down to Daniel, who was gazing into my eyes. I leaned down and kissed his forehead, rubbing his arm. "Do you need me to get you anything?" I asked. "You must be starving."
"Yeah," he said. "I really need food now." I chuckled and stood up.
"I'll go get us some food."
I walked downstairs to the lunch line and grabbed a tray for me and Daniel, then filled it up. I took it back upstairs to him and placed it on his bedside table.
"Thank you. I really need this!" He said, taking a bite out of his hamburger.
We heard a door open, and our heads turned. Ryder was walking in cautiously, knowing I was in here. "Hey." He said quietly. I kissed Daniel's cheek, then stood up and walked out the door, not even looking at Ryder. However, I did want to hear what he had to say, so I stayed behind the door.
"I heard from the nurse that you were awake. So I just wanted to say that I'm sorry. That hit was a little uncalled for." Ryder said softly. There was silence for a few seconds before Daniel spoke up.
"It's okay. I started it. I was the one who threw the first punch."
"I still shouldn't have done that."
"It's fine."
I knew this was coming to a close, so I hurried away before Ryder could find me. I found my room, then went in and sat on my bed. The apology wss a start. And I did feel a little bit better that Ryder apologized, but I still was angry and not sure if I was ready to forgive him. But still, I was able to fall asleep that night better than I have in the past few days.
