Chapter 59
Monday evening, Ryder and I were training again, but it wasn't going the way we had planned.
I shot one spell in Ryder's direction, and he blocked it, sending the spell in a different direction. It rebounded and hit the bookshelf, sending books exploding everywhere.
"Whoa," Ryder said. "Glad I blocked that."
He then sent a spell flying in my direction, but I wasn't quite ready for it. It hit me with full force and sent me flying back across the room. I hit the back wall and fell onto a mat.
Ryder swore and ran towards me. "Are you okay?!" He asked, terrified.
"Ouch," I said, bringing up my arm. I had a large scrape on my elbow where I had hit a desk.
"I'm so sorry Annalise," Ryder said. "That isn't supposed to be a strong spell at all. I don't know what happened."
He ran to a cupboard and pulled out a first aid kit. "This is going to sting a bit," he said, spraying some sort of disinfectant on my injury. I winced in pain. He applied a bandage over the scrape, and disinfected a few other marks I had from the incident.
"Maybe we should take the rest of the day off," Ryder said. "Let's go get something to eat."
We both exited the tunnel and entered the dining room, which was packed full of people. We both grabbed our dinners from the front of the room and sat down at a small table.
We were about halfway through our meals when we heard the crash.
Screams.
Panic.
Chaos.
All these things occurred within the next few moments.
Ryder jumped across the table and pulled me down to the ground. We looked up, and there was a huge hole in the building with a dark figure standing in the middle of it. Devin.
"Annalise Baker, I know you're here!" Devin yelled. Everyone was silent as they cowered on the floor.
"Come to me, or there will be more attacks in the future!" He bellowed, exiting the building.
I looked up at Ryder, terrified. What was happening?
After he knew it was safe to go, Ryder and I stood up. He ran out of the room, pulling me along with him. By the main staircase we ran into the Headmaster.
"Ryder!" He yelled. "Get her out of here now! You know what to do. I've already sent him a message."
Ryder nodded and pulled me up the staircase. We came to my room, and I unlocked in quickly, knowing Ryder was in a hurry.
"Pack." Ryder said. "Quickly."
"Wait, pack for what? How much?"
"Anything you can," he replied. "I don't know if you're coming back here."
My eyes widened. So this was serious. I took my suitcase out of the closet and began packing. Ryder had already left to who knows where, and I started throwing in all my clothes and belongings. A few minutes later, Ryder came back into my room with his own suitcase.
"How did you pack that fast?" I asked.
"I've been packed for weeks now. I knew this day was coming eventually." he replied.
I finished packing everything I had and followed Ryder out the door. We rushed downstairs and out the front entrance.
We got to Ryder's car, and he threw our luggage in the trunk. We both got in and he sped out of the parking lot.
"Where are we going?" I cried, terrified.
"To see my father."
