Chapter 46

"Annalise, can I borrow an eraser?" Sarah whispered to me. We were in History of magic, and we had to copy down notes from the board.

"Sure," I said, reaching down into my bag. I felt something hit my face, and I looked behind me. Ryder was trying to hold in a laugh, and I glared at him. He had thrown a piece of crumpled up notebook paper at me. I took out the eraser and handed it to Sarah, then continued with my notes. But something was different. On one of the margins of my paper, words slowly started to come into focus.

I still think you're cute when you're angry.

I turned around to Ryder, who was smirking at me.

"Stop it!" I whispered angrily. He had been bugging me for the last two weeks, and I was still angry with him. He hurt Daniel, and it was too hard to trust him.

The rest of the day dragged on and on, and eventually it was dinner time. I started walking to the staircase and went down the first flight, but then I noticed a weird sound. I continued down the stairs, and what I saw made me jump.

Ryder had some girl pushed up against the railing of the the staircase, and he was kissing her like there was no tomorrow. I think I must have made a soft gasp because Ryder pulled away and stared at me.

"I'm sorry!" I exclaimed, coming down the stairs. "I'll be going now!"

I ran as fast as I could down the stairs without falling. I could hear Ryder calling my name, but I didn't stop. Finally, I got to the ground floor and cafeteria, which I was thankful for. I was starving! I got in line for my food and tried to avoid thinking about Ryder. He can kiss whoever he wants.

I sat next to Daniel, since we weren't mad at each other anymore. After the accident, we both kind of forgot about our fight.

"Guess what?" Daniel said, opening his water bottle.

"What?"

"So I guess there's another dance coming up. Seriously? We just had one!"

"Really?" I asked, not very interested. My mind kept shifting to Ryder and that girl. "That's kinda dumb."

"Yeah it is. Some sort of Masquerade thing. I don't know, it looks stupid."

"Yeah."

Daniel gave me a weird look. "You okay? You seem pretty distracted."

"I'm fine." I said, taking a bite out of my lasagna. He didn't look like he believed me, but he dropped the subject. We ate in silence, and I just took my time. I wasn't rushing or anything.

An hour later, I finished my dinner and threw my trash away. I was tired, but I still needed to do some homework for my history of magic class.

I needed to wash off my hands before I went back upstairs, so instead of going to the staircase, I walked over to the women's restroom. I opened the door, and what I saw made me cup my hand over my mouth.

Ryder was in the women's restroom, kissing a girl.

And it wasn't the same girl as before.
