Chapter 49

Smack!

I looked to my right to see that Daniel's head had hit the desk. He wasn't snoring, but he was definitely breathing heavily.

I nudged him. "Daniel."

His mouth twitched, but he didn't wake up.

"Daniel!" I whispered a little louder.

"Huh?" He mumbled, confused. His eyes opened, and I guess he finally realized that he had fallen asleep. "Oh."

"You have five more minutes of this class. Try and stay awake, and then we can go get something to eat."

Today Daniel and I decided to take a free day. Well, half of a free day. Our History of Magic class was reviewing for our test on Monday, so although Daniel wasn't interested, I really didn't want to miss this class. And with A & D, our attendance is graded. But until then, we had the day to ourselves.

"Ugh, I know, but this class is just so boring,"

"I know, but it's five minutes."

Behind me, I could hear Ryder tapping his pen on the desk. We had all forgiven each other by now, but it was all still pretty awkward. Daniel and Ryder still weren't very fond of each other.

After what felt like eternity, the bell rang and everyone leaped out of their seats. Daniel swung his backpack over his shoulder, and I quickly picked up my papers and hurried out the door with him.

"I'm so ready to get out of here," Daniel said. "I need a break."

"Me too," I agreed. "Sometimes I just want to leave and go back home."

As we started walking down the stairs, we heard a voice.

"Well, well, well. What are you two doing?"

Ryder.

We both turned around, and he was standing at the top of the stairs with his arms crossed.

"Nothing." I said innocently. He smirked.

"Really?" He asked, slowly walking down the stairs towards us. "Because I'm pretty sure this isn't the way to our next class."

Daniel and I looked at each other, knowing we were caught.

"Look, Annalise and I were talking, and we just need a break day. Don't worry, I'll get her back for A & D. But we just wanted to go into town for a bit."

Ryder chuckled. "Sure. I get it."

"You do?" I asked.

"Of course. Before you came along, I hardly ever went to class. The only reason I go now is because I have to keep track of you."

"Oh, okay... so can we go now?"

"Yeah. As a matter of fact, I'm kinda bored too. I'm just gonna tag along."

Daniel frowned, annoyed that Ryder had just invited himself. I admit, I was kind of annoyed as well, but I knew there was no avoiding him. He was assigned to look out for me after all.

"Alright." I said, feeling Daniel's angry eyes on me. "But Daniel gets to make the decisions on what we do."

"Right. I don't want to distract you from your little date."

"It's not a date, Ryder." I said. "It's just our free day. Everyone needs a break sometimes."

"Yeah okay. Whatever you say."

I just rolled my eyes and ignored him. If he was going to be like this, it would be a long day. We continued down the staircase and out the doors. I was glad that I brought my jacket since it was mid-November, but I was still a bit chilly. I think Daniel noticed I was cold because he put his arm around me and rubbed my arm. I was thankful, but I still had the feeling he was doing it because of his feelings for me. Still, I allowed him to keep me slightly warmer as the three of us walked to town.
