Chapter 24
"You're supposed to hit me, not let me hit you," Ryder told me with an amused expression on his face. He walked over to me and helped me up.
"Sorry," I said shyly.
He chuckled and looked at the clock on the wall. We had been practicing for two hours. "Alright, I think that's enough for today." He said, rolling up the mat we had used to fight. "So, anyone ask you to the formal yet?" He asked me. I started to pick up the books we were using to stack them on the shelf.
"Well, no," I said. "But there is still time."
He chuckled. "The formal is a week from today."
"I know, but still. Did you ask Katrina?" He nodded.
"Yeah, she was pretty excited."
"That's good to hear."
Even though I absolutely hated Katrina after the comments she made, I was still happy for them. A happy couple always makes me smile.
"And did Daniel ask Sarah yet?" He asked me. Yesterday he had finally pestered Daniel for him to say who he was asking.
"Yeah, he asked her this morning at breakfast."
"That's cool."
It was silent for a while as we cleaned up. "You know, I can always have one of my friends take you." He started. I shook my head.
"No that's fine, I don't want it to be like that." I said. And I meant it. I didn't want someone to take me because they felt like they had to.
"Alright, if you're sure."
We finished cleaning up and exited through the tunnel, heading towards the cafeteria for dinner. When we got to the entrance, Daniel was waiting for us.
"How'd it go?" He asked me, not bothering to look at Ryder.
"Fine," I told him.
Well, that was a lie. The training session didn't go too well. I was still pretty weak from the incident with the sirens. We waited in line for our food and found a seat. Ryder didn't sit with us today, and I was kind of happy because the two boys wouldn't get the chance to fight.
"How are your classes with him?" Daniel asked me. I gave him a look of warning.
"Good. And how are yours?"
"Good."
There was a really awkward silence for awhile as we finished eating.
"I'm just... going to go now." I told Daniel, standing up.
He looked at me strangely, then nodded. I threw my trash away and started to climb the staircase, anxious to just crawl into bed.
After a flight or two of stairs, I had the sense that someone was following me. I turned around to see Ryder trailing behind me, and I jumped what seemed to be a foot in the air.
"Did I scare you?" He asked, laughing quite a bit.
"Yes!"
"I see you still don't understand that I'm not leaving you alone." He told me, crossing his arms over his chest. "Lucky girl, you're stuck with me."
