Chapter 60

"Ryder, what the heck is going on?" I cried. Ryder was going about 90 miles per hour down the road. 

"Listen, Annalise," Ryder started. "I haven't been completely honest with you about something."

Oh no. 

"What is it?"

He looked at me and sighed. "Devin isn't my cousin. He's my brother."

"He's what?"

"Yeah. And it gets worse."

I stayed silent, not knowing if I could handle any more news. 

"I'm also a prince. And so is he." 

"You're what?"'

"I know, I know. But there's a reason he's after you. My father named him the heir to the throne. He'll be the King eventually." 

"He's what?"

"Yeah, and he needs to kill as many people as possible so he won't be overthrown when he becomes King. That's why he needs to kill you and me. We are some of the most powerful wizards in the magic world."

"I didn't know the magic world even had a monarchy!"

"Well now you know."

"Why didn't you ever say anything about this before?" I asked.

He smirked. "I'm already irresistible enough. I don't need more girls throwing themselves at me once they know I'm a prince."

I rolled my eyes. "Humor during stressful times like this? Really Ryder?"

"I need to keep the mood light."

"Fine. So what are we doing? Why are we going to see your father?" I asked.

"I need to talk to him. We have to explain what's going on. He'll be able to stop Devin from doing anything else."

"Do you think he'll believe us?"

"I don't know," Ryder said. "My father has never liked me very much. Devin has always been the favorite. That's his boy."

"Didn't Professor Reynolds send out a message to him?"

"He did, but my father doesn't like him very much. Probably because he likes me more than Devin, and he knows he's evil."

"Ryder, I'm scared."

"I know. But it will be okay. I'll figure something out." 

It was quiet for an hour or so as we continued driving, but we eventually stopped at a hotel. Ryder checked us in, and we got settled into our rooms. Ryder picked up the phone and dialed the number for room service. 

"What do you want to eat, Annalise?" He asked me.

"Nothing." I said. I had no appetite. 

He sighed. "I'll have two turkey sandwiches and two bottles of water." 

"Ryder, what's going to happen now?" I asked after he had hung up.

"Well, I'm going to speak with my father and try and convince him to arrest Devin." 

"Do you think he will?" 

"I don't know."

"Aren't you scared?" I asked Ryder.

He sighed. "Devin's getting stronger. He's gaining power. But he's not as strong as us, so I'm not afraid."

"Really?" 

"I would be if I were alone. But your powers are so strong."

"Ryder, I barely know how to use them." 

"You don't have to." He replied. "They'll come to you when you need them. They know what to do."

There was a knock on the door, and Ryder answered. A man had delivered the room service. Ryder took the food and opened his wallet. He pulled out a $100 bill and placed it in his hand. 

"Whoa, thanks!" The man said. Ryder nodded at him and closed the door. 

"Wow, so are you, like, really rich then?" I asked.

He shrugged. "My father's the king, remember?" 

Ryder turned the TV on and tossed me a sandwich and water bottle. There were two beds in the room, and we each claimed one. 

"Seriously, Annalise. Eat your sandwich. You're going to need the energy." 

I stared down at my sandwich and began unwrapping it. I took little bites out of it and sipped my water. After I finished, I took my personal items out of my suitcase and went into the bathroom. I took a shower, changed into pajamas, and brushed my teeth. Afterwards, I came back to my bed and stared at the TV. A few minutes later, Ryder left to get ready for bed as well. When he was finished, he came back out from the bathroom without a shirt on. I tried not to stare, I really did. But he just looked so good. 

Ryder got settled into his bed as well, and we watched TV.

"Ryder, is everything going to be alright?" I asked.

"Yeah, it will be alright. I'll take care of you."
