Chapter 28

I looked up at the waterfall and sighed. There weren't many names left.

"Wow," I heard someone say. I turned around to see Katrina walking up to me with Penny at her side. "I didn't know it was possible to be dateless two days before a mandatory escort formal." I rolled my eyes and looked back at the waterfall.  It was Wednesday, and the formal was on Friday. "I mean, no one will ask you unless they're completely desperate." I ignored her, and eventually I heard them walk away.

"Hey," Someone said. I turned around again to see Daniel. I smiled and went over to hug him. "I heard Katrina. Don't listen to her." He told me. I shook my head.

"No Daniel, she's right. No one is going to ask me," I said, my heart hurting as I spoke.

"Yes they will, I know it." He replied, pulling me into another hug. He kissed the top of my head. "Anyone would love to have a beautiful girl like you for their date."

A tear rolled down my cheek, and I shook my head no. He stroked my hair and played with it at the ends.

"Let's go get something to eat," he said. "Maybe you'll feel better." I nodded a little and went to dinner with Daniel.

Afterwards, he took me to my room, and we watched TV for awhile. "Are you sure you don't want me to go with you instead?" He asked me. I nodded.

"I'm sure. I want you to have fun with Sarah."

"Okay. I'll see you tomorrow morning." He said, kissing my cheek and standing up.

"Bye," I told him. "Good night!"

"Good night, Annalise."

At breakfast the next morning, Daniel seemed a little different. He was really... affectionate. I think he really felt bad about the whole escort thing.

We sat down with our food, and he grabbed my hand and smiled.

"What are your plans after school today?" He asked me.

"I have another training session with Ryder." He frowned.

"Oh. Well after that, I was thinking maybe we can go into town tonight." He said. I nodded.

"I would love that." Daniel smiled, and we finished our meals.

In History of Magic, we had a work day for the whole hour, so Daniel and I mostly talked about TV shows, such as Breaking Bad and Criminal Minds.

Afterwards, Daniel and I said goodbye, and Ryder walked me to my next class like he usually does.

"So I heard from Katrina that you don't have a date yet." He mentioned casually. I nodded slowly.

"She would be right."

He continued walking, but for the first time, Ryder actually seemed uncomfortable. "I can have a friend ask you."

"No."

"Annalise-"

"No!"

He stopped and turned around to face me. "I don't want to see you upset." He said. "And I have a feeling that's what I'll be seeing at the formal." Oh no. His eyes were big and sad, and it looked like he really did care.

I shook my head. "It's fine, Ryder. Katrina was right about me. I'm pathetic."

"No, you're not. Katrina's just jealous that you're more powerful than she is."

I didn't answer to that. Really? Katrina jealous of me? Nah.

We continued walking to our class, and surprisingly, Logan was waiting at the door.

"Hey," he said.

I smiled. "Hello,"

Ryder glared at Logan. I don't know why he did that. Logan hasn't done anything wrong.

"How's it going?" He asked.

"Fine, I guess. You?" I asked.

"Pretty good."

We could both tell there was quite a bit of tension between Ryder and Logan, and I think Logan was trying to hint to Ryder to leave. Ryder could obviously tell this is what he was doing, but he didn't move.

"I wanted to ask you something." Logan said to me, glaring at Ryder.

Ryder gave a little chuckle, as if he were saying, "try to make me leave."

Logan finally gave up with the hints. "Ryder, can I be alone with Annalise for a moment?" He said through his teeth.

Ryder laughed at him. "I don't know if you knew this Logan, but I'm here to protect Annalise. So anything you ask her can be in front of me."

Inside my head, I banged my head against a wall. Ryder, just leave. I thought. But I guess he didn't hear my inside wishes.

"Fine," Logan said to Ryder.

Ryder just smiled at him.

"Anyway, Annalise." Logan began. "I was looking at the waterfall the other day, and it was shocking to see a girl as beautiful as you hasn't been asked to the formal yet."

Ryder stifled a laugh, and Logan and I glared at him.

"So, I wanted to know if you'd like to go with me."
