Chapter 4

When I walked out of Daniel's room, I closed the door behind me and mentally debated which way to go. I knew I was supposed to go upstairs, but I didn't know how to get there or what to do after that.

After a minute, I decided to take a left. I began to wander down the hallway until I heard giggling. A few seconds later, two beautiful girls my age came into view.

One was tall and blonde, while the other was a bit shorter with long, dark hair.

At the sight of me, they stopped walking and peeked at me.

"You lost? You look new." The blonde one said, looking at me from top to bottom. "No offense, but you look like you just walked out of a horror movie. What is with those clothes?" She asked, gesturing at my hand-me-down clothes from my mother.

Well then.

I definitely took offense to that.

"They're my mother's." I told her.

"Well they're hideous. Go get your new uniform. They're ugly, but much better than those rags. I'm Katrina, by the way."

I nodded at her. "Annalise."

"I'm Penny." The girl with dark hair said.

"I'm lost. Where are the girls dorms?" I asked them.

Katrina smirked. "Take a right and go down the staircase." She said.

Downstairs? I thought it was upstairs.

Oh well.

"Thanks." I said, walking past them.

As I turned to the right, they continued to giggle. I shrugged and continued to walk down the hallway until I reached the staircase.

At the bottom, there was a large metal door. It was weird. I didn't remember this. I put my hand on the handle and pulled. The door was heavy, but it swung open to reveal a dark room.

This was obviously not my dorm, but my curiosity got the best of me. I stepped a few feet inside and looked around. That's when I noticed there were about 15 other faces staring at me.

"Get her!" One shouted. I heard footsteps, and then I felt multiple people grab on to me. I screamed and kicked my feet, but they didn't let go.

All of a sudden, their hands stiffened. I realized my eyes were closed, and I forced them open. Three guys stood frozen in front of me. Their arms were in front of their faces. They were literally frozen. Ice coated their skin.

Suddenly I felt a force pulling me back through the door. It pulled me a few feet, and when I was out of the room, the door slammed shut.

"I know you're new here, but you should probably avoid walking into prison cells." A voice said behind me.

I turned around to see a guy leaning on the railing of the staircase.

My eyes widened. "What just happened?" I asked.

He shrugged. "Uh, I just froze the guys and pulled you out of there."

I continued to stare at this guy.

"You're welcome by the way."

"Thank you."

The guy smirked again. "I'm Ryder."

"I'm Annalise." I said shyly.

"That's a cute name. So I'm guessing you ran into Katrina and Penny, huh?" He asked.

I nodded.

"Figures. They do this to every new person. Then it's up to me to save the damsel in distress." He said with a hint of a smile. I blushed. "Follow me. I'll take you to the dorms." He said. "And for future reference, don't listen to anything those two say."

I followed him up the stairs, and he led me up a few levels before we finally came across the dormitories. I walked down a hall to find my room, and I unlocked it with my key.

"Thank you." I told the boy named Ryder. He smirked.

"It's cool. I like saving the lives of innocent women like yourself." he said. I internally rolled my eyes. This guy was cocky. "See you tomorrow, new girl?" He asked.

I nodded. "I guess so." I said before walking into my room and closing the door behind me.
