Chapter 19

"How's your lip?" Daniel asked as I sat down across from him at dinner.

"A little better," I told him. "But it still hurts." He frowned.

"I hope Devin's nose bleeds out," he said bluntly. I laughed a little. He smiled a little too.

"Did you ask Sarah to the formal yet?" I asked him.

"No, I haven't had the time to ask her yet today." I nodded.

"Do you have anyone in mind?" He asked me.

"No," I told him honestly. "Girls aren't allowed to ask anyway."

"Is there anyone you hope will ask you?" He asked. I shook my head.

"I don't really know very many of the boys here yet."

"No one you have eyes on?" He asked jokingly.

I smirked. "Nope."

"I mean I would be fine with that, as long as it's not Devin." He said.

I laughed. "I would agree with you, there."

"Or Ryder."

"What?"

He leaned closer to me. "Look, Annalise, I don't think he is the best person to be hanging around with."

"But why?" I asked, shocked.

"I don't know," he shrugged. "He seems like a troublemaker."

"Really? But he's helped me out several times now." I reminded Daniel.

"Still, I wouldn't be surprised if he's just playing with you. He seems like that kind of guy." He said.

"Oh." I said glumly.

"Look, I'm sorry Annalise, I really am. I just don't think he's good for you." He said sadly. "He won't take care of you like I can."

"You underestimate me, Danny Boy,"

We both turned to see Ryder walking towards us with his dinner.

To my surprise, he took a seat right next to Daniel. This was not going to end well.

Ryder laughed to himself. "Trust me, I'm awesome enough to take care of her."

Daniel scowled. "What are you doing here?"

"Can't a man just enjoy his food next to his friends?" Ryder asked.

He considered me as his friend? Really?

"No." Daniel shot back.

I kicked him under the table. "Daniel!"

"It's okay, sweetie, I can handle it." Ryder said.

I stood up, scared of what would happen next. "Well, I better get going!" I exclaimed. "Let's go Daniel!"

But Daniel and Ryder were busy glaring at each other.

"Daniel! Let's go!" I exclaimed again.

Ryder looked over at me. "Leaving so soon?" He asked us.

I nodded. "Yes! I have to... to... feed my dog."

Well that was stupid.

Ryder was looking at me with an amused expression, and Daniel looked at me like I was the biggest idiot he knew.

"Well, you're obviously tired," Ryder said, standing up. "I'll take you to your room."

"Absolutely not," Daniel said, standing up as well.

"You say that like it's going to stop me."

Oh no.
