Chapter 65

When I woke up the next morning to the sun shining through the curtains into my eyes, I looked to my right. Ryder wasn't there anymore. Was it all a dream? Or did Ryder actually kiss me last night? The thought produced butterflies in my stomach.

I sat up and stretched out my arms, yawning. Then I walked over to my bathroom and took a shower and brushed my teeth. As soon as I finished getting dressed, there was a knock on my door. I wonder if Ryder was here to sweep me off my feet again now that it wasn't the middle of the night.

I swung my door open, but it was Marina, not Ryder. "Oh, hi!" I said to her.

"Good morning!" She said cheerfully, stepping into my room. I gave her a questioning look. "Today we're going to try on wedding dresses." She explained. My jaw almost hit the floor.

20 minutes later, I was standing on a tall platform in front of a mirror. Marina was in the closet, searching through the racks. I wasn't in my room anymore, but we had moved to another guest room, where apparently all of the wedding dresses were taken to when they were shipped from 14 different countries.

All of them were puffy, and they took about 15 minutes to get into. But of course, none of them were "perfect" according to Marina, so two hours later, I was still standing on the platform with another puffy dress.

"This is definitely the one," Marina said. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. It was... big to say the least. It wasn't ugly, but I sure wouldn't have chosen it out myself. But I guess I wasn't going to be happy marrying Devin anyways, so it really didn't matter what I was wearing. "Oops, I forgot just one more thing. She went back into the closet and came out with a tiara with a long veil hanging from it. She put it on my head and fastened it into my hair. "Perfect!"

I stared at myself in the mirror once more as a tear rolled down my cheek. In less than two weeks, I would be wearing this to the worst event of my life. A thought popped into my head. "Marina, what happened to the queen?" I asked her.

Marina gave me a sad look. "The queen passed away a long time ago. It's been years. Devin and Ryder were only a few years old. But I'm just so glad that our kingdom will finally have a queen again."

Wow, that was actually very sad. As much as I disliked Devin and his father, I still felt bad that they've had to go through the same thing I did.  "Doesn't the king have to die before Devin and I become king and queen?"

She shook her head. "Nope, I'd say King William will be handing his position down to Devin within a year or so."

A year? I thought. That wasn't long at all. But then again, everything else in my life seems to be going pretty quickly. I slid my dress off, and Marina put it on a hanger. "You're having lunch with Devin at 11:30," she called. "Wear something nice, please."

I internally groaned and pulled on a long skirt with a matching blouse. I heard Marina leave, and I looked at the clock: 11:21. Oh well, maybe if I get there earlier, I can just leave earlier.

I walked downstairs to the main hall and saw that Devin was already waiting for me in a suit and tie.

"There's my bride!" He called with a grin on his face as soon as he saw me. "Let's go onto the patio for lunch shall we?"

I nodded, so we walked outside to a patio area with a beautiful glass table and two chairs. A butler pulled out the seats for us, then lifted the lids from both of our plates. Lobster, yum.

We sat in silence for awhile, enjoying our meals. The lobster was great! The company? Not so much. Finally, we engaged in some small talk, probably just to fill the silence. But then he changed the subject.

"So, are you excited for the wedding?" He asked.

I rolled my eyes. "Oh yeah, sure." I said sarcastically. The most furious look I've ever seen covered Devin's face. He stood up and threw the wine glass he was holding to the ground. It shattered, and I heard one of the maids give out a squeak in surprise. I, on the other hand, sat still, completely shocked.

"Now you listen to me," he growled. "You are going to behave yourself. You are going to be my wife in less than two weeks, and you will do nothing to embarrass me, or I'll make sure Daniel has a little accident." His voice was growing louder. "You're representing our kingdom and our world, and you will do nothing that will allow anyone to lose respect for us. Do you understand?"

At this point he was almost screaming, so I quickly nodded my head. "Yes."

Devin gave a nod and seemed to calm down a bit. He didn't sit back down, but he left the table and walked away. I sat still, shocked. It wasn't surprising that he had yelled at me, but I couldn't believe he did it where people could hear.

Still a bit shaken, I put my head into my hands and began to cry.
