———1996 ; age sixteen
Selene stood outside the bathroom door, looking at the worn in wooden door. It's paint chipping away as the year went on, houses age just like people. Selene always though that, especially when living in the same old house her whole life, a lot of things have changed. The colours of the couches aren't the same, the paint is chipping, the furniture is worn in, the walls have the same marks of where the door knob hits them. She's always liked that, always felt like she was growing with the house—they both have their scars and marks to show that they have lived.
This house has been her safety for sixteen years, she's known nothing but these walls and the miles of trees that surround it. She's always felt connected to it, felt like in her darkest and loneliest nights, the house would speak to her through its old home noises. Every creek and every crack, was a way of communicating with her.
So now, as she stood in front of the worn in bathroom door with chipped paint. She knew the house was communicating with her, the way the wind blew in through the window's around her almost to try and push her away. She knew. She knew that what laid beyond this door wasn't pleasant, wasn't meant for the eyes of teenage Selene.
She should have listened to the house that's only ever wanted to protect her, she should've stepped away—it would've saved her a life times worth of pain and misery.
At that second, water started to flow from under the door, soaking her feet from where she stood. Another sign for her to leave, and another sign for her to ignore.
"Mom?" Selene called out, but no answer.
Selene raised her hand, knocking on the bathroom door once softly and calling out to her mother again. Still, no answer.
That's when the fear started to crept up inside her, and as if something inside snapped—Selene started bang on the door. Loudly screaming out for her mother as she did, her fists practically punching the door repeatedly, hurting the house that she loved so dearly.
"Mom!" Selene screamed out, and after a flash of red—the door swung open. Causing a startled Selene to fall forward, into the bathroom. Facing planting into the puddle of water that coated the majority of the floor.
Selene groaned, rubbing her head as she sat up. For a brief moment she was dizzy and it took a second for her vision to focus. She wished it hadn't.
The first thing she noticed was the running water in the bathtub, it was overflowing like crazy. Pouring out of the sides and onto the floor, flooding the room. Then, she noticed the water was tainted red and became a pinkish colour. Then that's when she saw her.
"Mom...?"Selene spoke out, her voice just above a whisper.
Her mother laid in the tub, her eyes closed and mouth slightly open as he head rested against the wall. Her mascara was running down her cheeks, staining her pale skin. Her black hair stuck to her forehead, and the rest floated around her in the water.
Selene crawled closer reluctantly, on her hands and knees. As she approached, she noticed her mother white sun dress, the same one she wore every year on Sebastian's birthday—which was today. The third year anniversary of his death and what would've been his tenth birthday.
