CHAPTER FORTY-THREE: THOSE CURSED EYES
———"WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT WON'T WORK BOBBY?" Sam asked to the old man on the phone, he was tapping his foot on the ground as he listened to Bobby on the other end, then said, "It's a demon-dispelling ritual."
Across him in the diner's booth was Selene, who dared to say, "Maybe he got the translation wrong?"
The second the words left her mouth and hit the phone, Sam had to pull it away from his ear slightly as Bobby's shouting could be heard through the entire diner. Selene flinched at the shouting, like a kid in trouble, because she was.
"We—maybe we got the translation wrong." Selene corrects quickly, Sam nodded his head urging her to just take the fall for it. It seemed to work, as Bobby quieted down and Sam was able to bring the phone back to his ear.
Sam and Bobby talk a bit more for a few minutes, just as the waitress brought their food over. Putting a plate of fries in front of them, something to munch on as they discussed important matters.
Just as Selene eats a fry, Sam holds out the phone towards her and she shakes her head. Yet Sam shoves the phone closer to her, practically forcing it in her hand, Selene sighs as she reluctantly brings it up to her ear.
Quickly Bobby says, "Don't go blaming me for this kid." His voice stern and demanding, and she knew she had insulted him.
"Bobby, I'm sorry I didn't mean to—" Selene started, but her words were cut short by Bobby stopping her. Telling her it was fine, because he seemed to understand suddenly. As if he was already done being mad at her.
She was confused at his sudden switch up, that was until he started speaking again, "Sam told me what you said to them the other day. Also told me you've been avoiding talking about it since."
Selene looks at Sam, narrows her eyes a little as she them mouths the word, 'Snitch'. Sam just shrugs as he eats a few fries.
It was true, she's changed topics every time it was brought up. Sam tried to talk to her, but before he ever got a word out she'd claim to be busy, use the bathroom or leave to go get food. Even if they had just eaten. It was easy to tell when Sam wanted to have a serious talk, she sensed it coming a mile away, it was easy to avoid the crash when she knew it was coming.
As for Dean, he was easier, he didn't really want to talk about it as much. He didn't know what to say, he didn't know how to make her feel better because there was nothing he could do. He's accepted his fate, and the consequences that came with it.
Yet, things haven't been the same between the two of them for the past few days, it felt like Dean was walking on egg shells around her. He thought space is what she wanted, but in doing so, he's given her more room to be upset.
"Talk to those morons. There isn't any time for you to be pissing around mad, you'll regret it one day." Bobby advised her, his words sitting deep inside her and messing up all sorts of things. She didn't want to do it, but he was right—he was always right.
"I'll try." Selene told him, that was the best she could say, that's all she could do. Was try. "See ya, Bobby."
Selene hung up the phone after Bobby said his goodbyes, she handed the phone back to Sam across from her, as she avoided his eyes. Turning to look out the window for people passing by, as if waiting for one of them to be Dean so he could come stop the conversation Sam was thinking of starting in his head.
