CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE: THE SAFEST PLACE ON EARTH
———

STEAM HAD FILLED THE ROOM, it was hot against her skin and coated her skin in a layer of sweat and water. Staring in the mirror, the young girl brought her hand up and wiped away the condensation, revealing herself. Alison stared at her own reflection, her now wet hair stuck to her skin, her eyes red from all the crying she had done in the shower. She wore a tank top, which kept her skin exposed, along her glistening skin were the fresh wounds.

Cuts all along her upper arms, each only about an inch or two long, but deep enough that it had hurt and bled plenty. There was about ten on each side, and the longer she stood at them—the more she could feel the pain of them all over again. As if she was back in that factory, Gordon having her tied up, hands in chains hanging from the ceiling. She could still feel the blade pressing against her skin, as Gordon made slow cuts.

He never was going to kill her, he had told her that from the beginning. She was just bait, she knew that, but then he turned. When he came to her and was starving, hungry for flesh, starving for a taste. He somehow kept his promise of not killing her, but it didn't stop him from draining her. Every cut he made, he let her bleed out into a bowl, using her blood for fuel to be stronger. To try and kill the Winchesters.

Alison brought her left hand up, hovering over the marks on her right arm. Lightly she brushed her fingers against the marks, wincing at this and returning her hand back to her side. Alison sucked in a sharp breath, and she felt the burning behind her eyes.

Everyone else had scars, each one they had told a story. Dean and Reese had once taken turns telling stories about theirs, they were almost proud of them, proud of the victories their bodies carried. But right now, in this moment, Alison didn't look at her wounds and enjoy this victory, because there was none.

Her body had been tainted, ruined and for what? A little revenge that had nothing to do with her. Not that she blamed anyone other than Gordon, but it didn't stop the feeling of resentment grow inside of her. Her body will forever remember Gordon and what he did, will remember the fear that she felt, the pain he caused, the darkness that surrounded her for days. She'll never be able to forget that, because it was now scarred on her body forever.

Sobs started to rip through her, starting in her throat as if she was going to choke. Alison tried to hold it in, bringing a hand to her mouth to stop the sounds, but it only muffled her cries.

Alison wanted to be brave, to be strong like the others, like Dean and Sam. Like Reese and Selene. They were all so brave, but in the reflection of the mirror, staring back at her was that scared little eight year old girl. The girl who cried anytime someone would yell at her, who had nightmares of the things her told her lurked in the dark. That's who she was, deep down, she'll always be that little girl terrified of the world.

Just then, there was a soft knock at the door, followed by Selene's soft voice calling out, "Alison, you okay in there?" The question felt pointless, but given the fact that Alison had been in there for nearly an hour, it must've been necessary.

"Mhm—" Alison tried to reassure, but a sob escaped her causing her voice to crack under the pressure. Knowing that Selene had heard it but she didn't say anything, although Alison could feel her presence waiting on the other side of the door.

Selene stood in front of the door, searching her brain for the right words to say as she was the one in charge of Alison. Since Sam and Dean had left to go and pick up Reese, Selene had been here, but the whole time Alison just was in the shower. Now, as she reached her brain for something to say, all that came to mind was something that Selene was told once. It helped in a moment of need, and so having taking one deep breath, Selene spoke softly, "It's okay to not be okay. You're not alone, Alison. You'll never be alone."
