CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN; PROMISE OF DEATH
season 2 episode 11
———

SELENE SLIPPED BACK INTO THE ROOM, the book still tucked close to her chest as she stepped into her shared hotel room. She must've been in the room with Grandma Rose a lot longer than she thought because it was dark outside now. That's why she took a few steps before realizing that Dean was in here, standing in the room with a hand pressed to his forward as he rubbing his temple. Looking up at his girlfriend with an unimpressed look on his face, Selene raised as brow—thinking it was something she had done.

Then Dean gestures towards in front of him, to Sam who is sitting on a chair lazily. Eyes closing and opening, a bottle of beer stuck in his hand as he forces down the last bit of it. When he dropped his head to the back on the chair to look at her, his hair falling.

"You're upside down—how'd you do that?" Sam said out loud, and this made Selene almost laugh as she realized that precious, innocent Sam—was drunk.

Selene steps closer towards them, holding the book casually behind her back to avoid it catching anyone's attention. As she steps towards the bed, she drops the book into her bag undetected and without turning to look at it, keeping her eyes on her best friend who couldn't keep his head up straight.

"Is he that drunk?" Selene asked, slightly shocked that someone like Sam would go and get drunk while working a case. That was more of a thing Dean and Selene do, especially when their on the verge of a breakdown. So, was Sam on the verge of a breakdown?

Dean nodded his head, confirming her question as he silently pointed to the empty bottle of liquor sitting on the dresser. It was full when they left the room, now it's completely empty, not even a drop left.

"Dude, what are you thinking? We're working a case." Dean scolds him like a parent would a child, even crossing his arms over his chest in anger as he did. Sam just scoffed, unfazed by his words.

Sam gestures towards Selene, "Lena did it, why can't I?"

"We weren't working a case. What's going on, Sammy?" Selene kept her tone softer, not wanting to upset him because she can already feel just how much he was hurting right now.

So far, Sam's avoided her eyes. Didn't want to look at her because for reasons unknown to him, he always felt like his emotions were intensified when he looked at her. Like she was the key that unlocked his emotional flood gates, and now that's he drunk, he doesn't have much control over that anymore.

"The guy who hung himself, I couldn't save him." Sam says, looking at the ground in front of them as his eyes glossed over.

Selene looked over at Dean, unaware that there was another death in the building. He just waves her off, telling her that he'd talked about it later—they have to deal with the youngest Winchester first.

"What are you talking about?" Dean asks, unsure how his brother could blame himself for a death that he had no way of predicting. "You didn't know, you couldn't have done anything."

"That's an excuse, Dean. I should've found a way to save him. I should've saved Ava too." Sam mumbles the last part, his head swaying back of forth as he speaks. Lifting his head up to look at them but never met their eyes, he felt ashamed of himself for what he couldn't do. Yet, no one in the room was blaming him.
