CHAPTER FORTY: HYPOCRISY AT ITS FINEST
———FIRE FILLED HER LUNGS, they burned and ached as she clawed at her chest for them to be put out. Although it wasn't fire that filled them, it was water.
Selene's eyes opened and she found herself submerged in a body of water, below her was an open dark void of endless water. Above her was the surface, a bright light casting between shadows, creating rays of light to cloud her vision.
The burning in her lungs was growing, her throat tight as she was choking on the water filling her up. Selene started to swim, as she pushed herself through the water, eyes becoming cloudy as she grew weaker and weaker.
The rays of light started to blend together, as if the surface was getting further and further away. For a moment, she thought she would never reach it, thought she was doomed to forever live reaching and grasping at the chance of life.
That was when she broke the surface, her head coming up as she reached out in front of her, her hand coming in contact with land. As Selene was coughing out the water that filled her lungs, she was clawing her way out of the water. Gripping the mud and grass as she pulled her body out of the freezing cloud water.
When she finally managed and when there was no more water burning inside of her, Selene rolled onto her back and stared up at the beautiful bright sun creeping in through the trees. Wind blew through the air softly, making the tress dance and the birds sing.
Closing her eyes, Selene relished in this moment of pure peace. She could feel her heart beating, actually beating—she was alive.
"Selene! Selene!" A voice shouted in the distance, so quiet and far that it sounded as if he came from her mind. For a moment, she thought she had made it up, especially because she recognized that voice. That was until they shouted again, "Selene, where are you?"
"Dean..." Selene coughed out, her voice raspy and raw, so quiet not even she could have heard herself.
Despite all that pain in her, her bones aching, her chest tight—she had to find the strength in herself to push herself up. Grabbing the nearest tree, Selene used it to support her weight, her eyes scanning the surrounding area looking for him.
Taking a. step forward, Selene allowed herself to wobble to the next tree and the next and the next. Pushing herself from tree to tree as Selene and Dean searched for each other, she tried following his voice. His voice that sounded so desperate and broken, so needy to find her.
That's when she saw him, between the trees and in the near distant, she saw him. He had come to a stop as he spun around in search for her, bringing his hands to his hair as he felt like his mind was crumbling. He couldn't find her, yet she found him.
"De—" Selene started, her voice cracking and came out as a squeak. Selene cleared her throat, forcing herself to shout through the scratchiness and painfulness in her throat, "Dean!"
With that, his head snapped in her direction, his eyes finding her almost instantly. Seeing her bright red hair poking out from the trees, although she wasn't that close—he could see her clearly.
For a moment, it was like he was seeing a ghost. The sun above them giving her a natural glow, and felt as if the trees had now moved out of his way to give him a clear path. Everything else slowed down as Dean started to race towards her, jumping over the obstacles in his way. Nothing would stop him from getting to her now.
