CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO: SHE'S A RUNAWAY...AGAIN
season 3 episode 10
———

THROWING OPEN THE DOORS, the familiar scent of alcohol and regrets fill Dean's senses. He was in some broke bar in the middle of no where, men came here to drink their sorrows and forget about their wives. Now, Dean came here but not to wallow in his pain, but to find his brother—who was doing enough wallowing for both of them.

Dean made his way to the bar, where he had spotted Sam sitting, alone. He was quick to question him, "There you are. What are you doing?"

Sam looks at him with a blank empty stare, before turning back to the glass in his hand and plainly stating, "Having a drink."

This made Dean raise a brow, "It's two in the afternoon and you're drinking whiskey?"

Sam shrugs casually, "I drink whiskey all the time."

"No you don't." Dean reminded him, moving to sit down next to him as he asked, "What's going on with you? My wife is the one who ran away and don't see me drowning myself in booze...now yet anyway."

That's when Dean reached forward taking Sam's glass and finishing it for him, then ordering two more to the bored bartender. Sam still not even looking up from his hands that were on the counter, picking at the skin around his nails out of habit.

Sam wasn't sure when it was that he started to fall down the rabbit hole, he knew that Selene leaving was for the best. He had even given her permission in that moment, being the last push she needed to go and help herself.

But now that she was gone, he was starting to regret it. It was like there was now a hole in his chest, one that was only growing the longer and longer they were apart. It had only been a few days, nearing a week at this point since she left them. But everyday got worse and worse.

Reese and Alison stayed behind at Bobby's, Reese recovering from a stab wound while trying to help Bobby search for a way to break Dean's deal. Alison was trying to decipher the spell book they found, the one only Sam and her could see.

All while Sam and Dean went looking for Selene, not having much luck in that department. Not that Sam was really offering much help, Dean was angry with her and Sam was just shutting down.

"What is it, Sammy?" Dean asked, a bit more sincerely this time. Trying not to lose his brother and wife all in one week, because Dean knows that Sam's weird connection with Selene and the Witch is making him pull away.

"I tried, Dean. I tried to save you. I tried to save Selene. And where has that gotten us?" Sam shrugged, clearly on the verge of giving up hope on everything. The weight on his shoulder becoming unbearable, and that is exactly what Dean wanted to avoid. "I mean where you're going...what you're gonna become. I can't stop it. Selene can't stop it. I'm starting to think even Ruby and Rowan can't stop it."

Dean remained silence for a moment, unsure what to say besides that he had known all along. There was no saving him.

Sam continued, turning to his brother this time to ask the daunting question, "Have you even thought about it? Hell, I mean. Selene's been there, she didn't come back as our Selene. She's so broken, Dean. I'm gonna lose both of you."

Once again, Dean remained silent. He had no words of reassurance to give, no joke to lighten the mood, no comfort to ease his pain.
