CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE: WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE?
———
PRESSING A HAND AGAINST HER FOREHEAD, Bobby felt the fiery temperature inside of Selene. He quite literally burned his hand, causing him to wince as he jerked it away. She was dripping in sweat, but by the heat of her skin she was soaking in fire. Although it was strange how peaceful she looked in this moment, eyes closed without the look of pain that seemed to cover her features nowadays.
Bobby then placed some food on the end table, but didn't leave just yet. He couldn't, it was just them now. Everyone else was gone, and Bobby was able to just settle with his emotions. With the reality of this situation.
As the old man, he usually put all this pressure on himself to have all the answers. To guide the boys when they needed him, but not so much to the point where they relied on him. He knew they were grown, he can't baby them every step of the way.
But with Selene, it was different. It was almost like she was his baby, he fought the urge to call and check in on her every single day. Sometimes, he'd get these gut feelings, one where he would suddenly get so worried about her in the middle of the night. Even at breakfast.
Then he'd get a text, as if Selene knew, as if she had that same feeling. She'd let him know she was okay, that she'd call him when he could. Even if neither of them had nothing to ask, she'd still talked to her old man. For however long she could—and she always picked up.
Selene once picked up while she was fighting a demon, she put him on speaker and placed the phone down. All because she knew that poor Bobby would go into a full spiral if she didn't answered.
That's what he saw when he looked at her, a girl so sweet that she radiated her own light. A girl who still carried a sparkle in her eye even when she's seen the fires of hell, when she's been burned and scarred more than any living soul should be. She's seen the darkest parts of the world, and still tried to be the guiding light for others.
That's why it broke in him, because now he only saw the overwhelming darkness that was surrounding her. Eating her from the inside, destroying the light and leaving behind nothing but raw agony.
If Bobby could have his way, he'd take it all. He'd carry the weight of the world on his shoulders if it meant Selene could keep the sparkle in her eyes. He'd die, a million dies, just to save her from this torture—hell, he's already tried.
Just as Bobby was about to step away, unable to bare the sight, he saw the slight flutter of Selene's eyes open. It was calmly, almost like she was awaking from a peaceful dream, despite the permanent tears that were still trickling down her cheek.
"Bobby?" Selene muttered, almost like a little hope that it was him sitting there.
Without hesitation, the old man took his hand into her uncuffed one. Quick to reassure her, "It's me, kid, I'm right here." As his words left his mouth, he felt her hand squeeze back. Having to make sure it was real, that it was really him.
In a complete silence, Bobby watches as Selene's bottom lip starts to quiver as she cries with her eyes closed. But it didn't look like she was trying to just hold in her tears, it was like she was trying to go back into her head. Into whatever peaceful dream she had found herself in.
"I don't want to die," Selene admitted sadly, her voice breaking under the pressure she was drowning in. Eyes still closed, chasing the dream world she had left behind, "But I can't keep doing this."
