1993 ; age thirteen
Selene's eyes fluttered open, letting the dim evening light creep into them slowly. Her arms and legs stretched out as far as they could followed by a tired yawn, she felt the fabric of her worn in living-room couch.
After lifting her heavy head up, Selene took a look around her house. The sunlight from the windows being her only source of light, but it was enough for her to figure out that she was alone.
"Mom? Dad?" Selene called out, pushing off the blanket that was wrapped around her legs. Yet still, no response, "Hello?"
Selene stood, her eyes barely open and the new movement making her have to do a second stretch. After that, she walked towards the kitchen, which was drastically darker than the living room. The only light coming from the little window above the sink, and Selene didn't bother to turn on the lights.
As Selene stood there, still in a haze from just waking up, she managed to see a few things in the darkness. First thing being an ice cream cake that had been nearly completely melted, the words that once read Happy 8th Birthday, now was a sticky melted mess. Unreadable.
Second thing she noticed was a note, resting on the kitchen counter next to the cake. She took it in her hands, avoiding to the the sticky edges as rubbing her eyes a few time until the words came into focus. It was her hand writing, and it read-
Seb and I went down to swim at the lake. Be home later.
- Lena
Selene didn't remember writing this, or going down to swim at the lake with Sebastian-her little brother, who's eighth birthday was today. In all honesty, she doesn't remember how she even went to sleep on the couch.
The last thing she remembers is meeting one of her moms friends, her mom introduced them to each other over some tea and then she woke up on the couch. But that was in the morning, she has an entire day unaccounted for.
When Selene looked up and out the window, she saw only her reflection. Her deep red hair resting around her shoulders, it was messy from her nap and her eyes were always a bright green, just like her fathers. Although her hair was like no other in the family, all of them had dark brown basically black hair. Just another reason she never fit in her family.
"Selene." A voice said from behind her, making her jump around in a fright.
In the dim light stood her father, his hands at his side as he stared blankly at her. Yet his eyes were glossy, despite his emotionless expression. He had bags under his eyes, his black hair was a mess and his cheeks and lips were rosy. Like he had been crying for hours.
"Hey Dad," Selene breathed out, taking a step towards him only for him to take a step backwards further into the shadows. She froze in place, having a terrible feeling wash over her. Like a guilt-shame, she could feel her eyes start to burn with tears and her hands tremble. "Where's mom and Seb?"
"She was right." His voice was low and dark, not the same dad she knew yesterday. She couldn't see his face much anymore, just that he was looking down at her. But it felt as if he was looking through her, never meeting her eyes, "She was always right."
Selene started to get scared, noticing her father inching forward in the dark. For whatever reason, she started to step back, knowing that her father wasn't himself in this moment. And as he stepped back into the light, his green eyes appeared darker than usual.
"Are you okay, dad?" Selene asked, her voice shaky and quiet as it matched the fear and worry inside of her.
There was no answer from her dad, not one that she could distinguish. It sounded like he was trying to say something, but couldn't, his words getting caught in his throat. It scared her even more.
