Oh, I'm coming too

Pedri and his brother were the first ones to come over and it ended with me and him playing FIFA while Fernando was making some magic happen in the kitchen as it started to smell heavenly. By 8.55 everyone had arrived and we were all glued to my TV screen, waiting for the Telediario to start. It finally started and the news anchors welcomed the viewers and did some unnecessary chit-chat, before finally beginning to deliver the news. The first segment was immediately about the situation in Israel/Gaza and we all listened attentively. They had two reports from their own journalists first, before the female host finally said:
"And now we'll be talking to La Vanguardia's correspondent, Victoria Hernandez, who is currently on site in Jerusalem. What can you tell us about today's happenings?"

Vicky's face appeared on screen and my face lit up.
"YES!!" I shouted and threw my fists in the air when I saw her wearing the star earrings I had gifted her. That earned me a few smiles and chuckles from the people around me, but I didn't care. There she was, my Vicky. She looked beautiful as always though I couldn't help but notice that the usual shimmer in her eyes had faded a bit. She was talking about the local people and their emotions she perceived when talking to them and walking through the streets - fuck, I couldn't even imagine what was going on there and what she was experiencing. How will she be when she comes back? I quickly pushed those thoughts aside and continued listening to her wonderful voice.
Her interview eventually ended and just like that, she disappeared again.

"Man, she was cool" Fermín said and nudged my arm.
"She was, right?" I replied with a proud grin and everyone nodded.

Vicky - Israel ❤️
I'm still with the TV guys and they're giving me really strong wi-fi, so I could facetime if you want?

I didn't hesitate and quickly tapped on the video call icon next to her name and she immediately appeared.
"Hello mi amor!" I exclaimed, holding the phone so she could only see my face first.
"Hi!! Did you see it, how was I?" she asked excitedly.
"I saw it, wanna know who else?" I replied and shuffled, trying to get everyone assembled on and around the sofa into the picture. She gasped.
"Hi!!" she exclaimed, her voice breaking a bit, she looked like she was tearing up a little.
"You were great! I'd call myself an expert on Middle Eastern geopolitics now. I'm quitting football tomorrow, you watch out, I'm coming for your job" Ferran joked and we all laughed, including her.
"Ok, you guys, I'm leaving you for a minute to talk to my girlfriend. Alone." I said and quickly hurried to my room.

I heard them howling and laughing, probably making inappropriate jokes, but I didn't care, I was so happy to see her. She updated me on her first few days over there and I was relieved that she had settled in well, her colleagues were nice and her editor was happy with the articles she was submitting. She asked me about yesterday's game and how my upcoming week looked like and I told her that I was bummed about having to miss out on our next League game as we would be playing at home and that was always a special feeling, but it was also a way for me to get some rest, which wasn't a bad thing either. She had to get going eventually, but we promised to keep each other updated via texts until the next opportunity for a video call.

When I joined my friends again in the living room they were all grinning and I knew what they were thinking.
"No, we didn't have phone sex. She was in an open square in Jerusalem. With the TV camera guys. That's not my ideal setting for that stuff" I clarified and rolled my eyes.
While listening to the rest of the news, we dove into the huge sushi plate Ale had brought and it was really good. After finishing, the people started to scatter a bit around my house, some were outside in the garden, some were standing on the other side of the living room and Ferran was the first one to excuse himself and go as he was very tired.

The water jug was empty and I quickly stood up to walk to the kitchen to fill it up again.
"Hey Ana, what are you doing here all alone?" I asked her as I walked in.
"I just don't get why she left?" she blurted out and turned her face to me, she looked visibly upset and about to cry any second.
"Hey hey hey, ok, here, drink some water, let's calm down for a second" I said, trying to get the situation under control. To be honest, I was a bit surprised: Vicky told me that Ana had been the most supportive one of her friends, with Chiara being the saddest and most hurt. But maybe I just confused the names and couldn't remember well...
"It's so hurtful, I'm missing her so much, why is she doing something so dangerous and reckless? Did you see the footage of how the people look like after their homes get bombed?" she said agitatedly.
"Ana, she's taking care of herself, she told me that she's cautious and pays attention to where she goes" I replied, trying to calm her down.
"She had everything! Why did she feel the need to go? Why is she leaving us behind?" she sniffled.
"It was her dream job. She didn't hesitate when it was served to her on a silver plate..." I explained, putting a hand on the kitchen counter and leaning over a bit.
She took a few steps closer to me and put her hand on mine, that was on the counter, then she looked up into my eyes.
"I would have never left someone like you behind." she whispered before brushing past me and leaving the room. I heard her putting on her coat, opening and closing my entrance door as she left the house.

Confusedly, I looked at my hand, where seconds ago hers had laid upon. Why was she stirring up questions in me? Why did Vicky leave me behind?
