It was Friday night, very late by now, and we were all gathered in my family's caseta. The band was playing Flamenco songs and my cousins had animated me to dance. I was a good dancer but... I thought the sevillanas to be very... sensual dances even though they involved little contact with your partner in front. But it was Luis currently in front of me and were holding very strong eye contact and due to the limited space, our bodies did brush close to each others. My head was starting to spin and I was happy when the song was finally over so that I could slump back down on some chair and drink more rebujito.
Blanca also sat out a song to call her boyfriend Roro but she returned for the next dance, while my brother sat down next to me. All my family was dancing and I was just enjoying watching them, casually chatting to whoever needed a break. After a while, it was Luis' turn to sit out and he took the chair next to mine. It was late and the alcohol had gone to my head, making me feel a little dizzy, so I leaned my head against his shoulder and he put his arm around me as we watched the others dancing the millionth dance.
"Do you ever think about how easy it would be if we just were together?" I blurted out and he looked down at me with a grin. "It would be a disaster!" he chuckled and I acted offended. "Hey! Why would you say that?" I gasped, but laughed too. "Because you wouldn't be like Chiara and stay. If Gavi showed up at our wedding you'd run away with him 100%. You shouldn't let it get to that point, so just bag him now" he replied and I looked surprised. "Chiara told Mateo about that?" I asked. "Sure. They're best friends more than anything else" he replied and sighed. He didn't want to say it out loud but their marriage was based more on friendship than on love. But they both knew that and had chosen together to go down that road.
"Thanks for being my friend" I said sincerely and laid my head on his shoulder again. "You deserve the best" he replied and patted my hair. "And you think Gavi is the best? Everyone seems to think that for both of us and... I'm just confused" I told him in all honesty. "He is. He will make you happy like no other man ever will, he will give you everything you long for. Because you don't just long for a family, you long for a family with him, you don't long for a happy life, you long for a happy life with him." he replied, staring off into space. "You're right. I'll talk to him as soon as I get back from Madrid. And if he rejects me again it's time to pack my bags and disappear abroad like my Dad suggested" I decided. Luis gave me an encouraging smile and I squeezed his arm.
