Pearl knew that Steven was struggling. It was obvious in his every moment of existence, it was obvious in the way he avoided her gaze.
She knew she was partially to blame.
It hurt her when she came to visit and Steven would become Star and Diamond just at the mere sight of her.
She was trying to make amends, but sometimes it was impossible to force herself to speak. She wanted to say the right thing. She wanted to be the Steven he needed for him.
"Hello, Diamond." It was strange addressing him as such but she would get used to it eventually.
He swiveled his head her way and tried to smile, but it looked more like a grimace.
She must have made a face because he ceased trying. "Hello."
They were both gems, they could have a conversation without the suffocating strangeness of it all, right?
"Why are you here?" He asked evenly.
His lack of emotion was off putting but she tried to sound cheerful.
"I just wanted to come by and see how things were going." Star entered the living room and scowled.
"Obviously not well. Mr. Robot here got territorial of Connie again."
"I'm not a robot," Diamond snapped.
"Was she upset?" She imagined she must have been if they had split over it but Star shook his head.
"Of course not. She's so understanding and great. We don't deserve her." He sounded angry, as if he truly believed it.
It was hard to put herself in their shoes. Diamond wasn't much for socializing and Star was often grumpy.
But she tried her best. And that had to count for something.
She wondered what Rose would think. She always wondered what Rose would think.
