"I'm me. I've always been me."

The true horror of that phrase had not hit him until he turned 17, moments before he first unfused.

Gone were the days when he could blame everything on his mother, or his Diamond half.

When he lost it and started to spiral, Connie was there to hold him and assure him that she was there, and she would never leave.

The days when they were split were often heavy with grief as he mourned his wholeness and sanity. He was pitiful, he could see it in the way people looked at him.

He couldn't escape either. Their earrings only covered a criminally short distance so he could never truly be rid of his Diamond half.

He was there when he slept and awoke. He watched him eat with disinterest. He followed closely behind him when he went for walks to clear his mind.

Diamond tried to smile, and failed miserably almost every time.

And that constant close proximity was how Star had found himself in a staring contest with Diamond, sitting at the other end of the table.

Connie was watching something in the living room, and he noticed in the back of his mind that the TV had been turned down after a few moments of them not moving. She was always prepared and ready to stop a bad situation in its tracks.

He liked that about her.

But there was no malicious intent behind it, they were simply observing one another, warily as it may be.

Diamond spoke first.

"You need me,"

Star scrunched up his face about to tell him off but the Diamond held up a finger.

"But I need you too."

He spoke like it was the first time he was realizing this, even though they were tethered together for eternity.

And Star crossed the distance to hug him. After a moment, the gem wrapped his arms around him too.

A bright flash of light fills the room. And they are whole again.
