I Didn't Mean To

It was a complete accident. Mostly.

Star wasn't normally the one with the 'break things' kind of temper, but there was a first time for everything and that's how he'd ended up smashing one of Diamonds art pieces and screaming he hated him with all his being.

Diamond had what felt like a hundred of them, but this one in particular was very special to him.

And that's when it started.

Star was no longer acknowledged by Diamond in any way. It didn't matter if he shouted or cried or begged, Diamond wouldn't turn his head. When he got in his face he would stare straight past him.

He hadn't realized how much he had grown to enjoy Diamonds company. They were part of the same person, and it felt like losing a chunk of himself entirely.

Connie would spend at least a few hours daily trying to get them to talk. Diamond would listen, but his stance wouldn't change.

She rubbed over Stars head as he sobbed so hard he thought he would puke. Diamond was not far away, sitting at the kitchen table sipping at hot chocolate. He was staring blankly at the fridge, taking a sip every 8 seconds like a trained machine.

"Star, it's okay. He– he's going to get over it." Connie murmured. She didn't know if he would, though. She'd never seen this kind of commitment to the cold shoulder in her life, and though Diamond had acknowledged it was petty, he continued doing it. But he couldn't do this forever.

Star choked on the words and dug his fingers into her leg, needing her to know he was there even though she wasn't the one ignoring him. "He's breaking my heart!"

Her own seized as she tried to fight back tears. It was so raw and genuine she couldn't believe Diamond didn't react in any way. She felt herself reacting to it, reaching down to kiss over his tear stained cheeks.

She turned to him, watching as he tipped the cup all the way back. "You're tearing him apart, Diamond."

He didn't respond to her either. He put the cup in the sink and washed it slowly before putting it away. In the next moment he walked out of the front door onto the balcony and slammed the door shut so hard a screw popped out.

Star jumped in terror at the loud noise and she held him as he trembled.

A week later Star sat on the balcony himself, strumming at his ukulele as he watched the tide. He found a pattern that matched his mood but a smile didn't appear.

"I didn't mean to
I didn't mean to
I didn't mean to
I didn't mean to...
What am I supposed to say?
What am I supposed to do?
Normally I'd just ask you but,
We haven't spoken
We haven't spoken.

Would you say what you always say?
It's better if we tell the truth..."

He lost the flow and sighed deeply, wishing the sadness would leave along with the air in his lungs. He left it there in the sun and crashed on the couch, dozing off to Crying Breakfast Anime.

A few hours later, he heard something in the depths of his sleep that made him stir.

"Would I say what I always say?
It's better if we tell the truth
But look at what the truth has done
Your heart is broken
Your heart is broken
And what good is
'I didn't mean to'
When I see you
Looking like you do?
What good is
'I didn't mean to'
When I see you
Looking like you do..."

Diamond was standing against the wall of the house, strumming his uke in the same chord progression, singing to himself. Or maybe to Star.

His pink light seeped into the darkness and through it, casting burgundy shadows that looked like blood.

Star went out and sat on the stairs overlooking the water a respectful distance away. He didn't know how he knew that Diamond would care, or that he would take the first part.

"What am I supposed to say?
(I didn't mean to)
What am I supposed to do?
(I didn't mean to)
Normally I'd just ask you but,
We haven't spoken
(I didn't mean to)
We haven't spoken
(I didn't mean to)..."

"I didn't mean to
I didn't mean to
I didn't mean to
I didn't mean to..."  Star pulled his knees up to cry silently, not wanting to push him away by making himself more known than he already was.

Connie listened as their voices mingled through the open window and hall to their bedroom. She had not been doing anything at all, just staring up at the ceiling quietly.

She slipped out of bed and peeked around the corner to see Diamond sitting next to Star.

He didn't move to comfort him, but his shoulders shook along with Stars.

To her surprise, Star pulled Diamond into his shoulder as his own crying lessened and they watched the moon travel over the ocean in ripples.

A/N: So, I don't usually do authors notes as much anymore. But this chapter rips your beating heart out of your chest and holds it in front of your screaming face. It's so raw, so real, and I used Rebecca Sugars song from Spiral Bound. It just fit perfectly, and I'm just really truly proud of this.
