Reading by the fire while Star took a nap was comforting for Connie. A moment to relax and take some time for herself was always welcomed and she was pleased with Star's ability to be alone for brief periods.

And it was sitting in Diamonds lap that she hears it for the first time, so quiet it was barely a whisper,

"I love you."

Connie doesn't respond correctly at first, she says a simple, "I love you, too" and goes back to her reading. It's instinct. One that she always means, but an instinct nonetheless. Her crowded mind would often take its sweet time to catch up with reality. She reads the same sentence four times before she realizes what has been said.

A book flutters to the floor and her heart threatens to climb up her throat.

He's humming with power, he often does, but this time it's gentle and soothing.

She turns slowly to look up at him. The orange flames flicker over his skin, he gazes into it with an expression of pondering the secrets of the universe.

His eyes finally meets hers.

"I- You– you just –," She tries to speak. To ask him if she heard correctly. To ask him if he means it. To ask if he's feeling okay.

But he presses his lips to hers and changes his powers frequency to healing, because he knows she likes that and he wants to try to be romantic.

Her face is wet when she pulls back, and he thinks he has upset her. He does not try to take it back and waits for her to form a coherent sentence.

"I love you too, Diamond." Her eyes are shining and he feels a little more human.
