"Hey, Connie," Steven started carefully approaching the woman standing in the kitchen. "Whatcha doin'?"

"Detoxing. Star and Diamond had a really nasty fight the other day. I'm not over it yet." She dropped a knife into the drawer after sliding on a cover and picked out another one, locking it as soon as it shut.

"Are you mad?" He knew the answer, or at least he knew the one she'd give him.

"No." She jammed the knife against the stone. "No, I'm not."

"So sharpening knives in the dark at 2 am is just a hobby then...?" He gulped when she spun around, knife in hand.

"I'm dulling them, actually," She corrected. When he didn't respond she sighed. "Yes, Steven. It's a hobby. A hobby I do to give myself something to do that requires skill when I am thinking too much." She returned to dulling it silently.

He backed away until he found a chair and sat, watching her. It was 2:37 by the time she finally started to break.

It started as a sniffle and a bitter laugh. He perked up but stayed seated.

Then she whimpered, muttering to herself to pull it together. He was ready now, ready to catch her when she fell.

Another 15 minutes went by before she delicately sat the last knife back into the drawer, locked it and walked to the edge of the ocean with the keys.

Connie chucked them as hard as she could, an impressive distance for a human on the verge of a crisis and she walked back in, seeing him sitting in his chair. Her face crumpled and he rushed to catch her, holding her tight and apologizing over and over.

"That's not helping!" She cried, clinging onto him. "I need you, Steven! I need you!" Her fists were clenched from weakly beating them against his chest and her lips found every spot, her human healing kisses not working except for emotionally.

"Hey, look," He pulled her away so she could look at him. "What do you want me to say? I'll say anything you want me to." He hated making her cry like this, he hated Star and Diamond but he tried to focus on her so he could be there for this. He needed to be.

"I need you," She repeated again. "You guys, you as a whole person, are one of the main things I live for. Please don't take away my best friend." She cupped his cheek and pulled his face down towards her so she could kiss him. "Don't do it again, Steven."

His feelings were muted, so he pulled her into a hug, letting her cries echo around the apartment. "Okay."
