chapter 74

"you're quiet. Not even a good morning" Damon stated when she put his coffee down in front of him without insulting him for making her bring him coffee.

"I need to get to work. I apologize I don't feel like speaking boss" she stated.

Damon nodded and let her leave. Something was wrong.

Since he started training her, she would make a comment about the coffee. She was either happy and wished him good morning or she lacked sleep and told him to be quiet. She never spoke so formal.

He decided to keep an eye on her today. She wasn't needed much for mafia stuff. Damon had Olivia doing jobs instead as he didn't want Clara in any danger and he wanted to give her what she wanted. A normal life. So although she was staying till the end, he decided to keep her out of mafia stuff as much as possible.

He found an excuse to call her into his office an hour later.

"You sent across those files, missed punctuation twice. It was careless" he told her. He had easily fixed the mistakes but he knew Clara would see it as a easy fix and tell him to do it himself. She would call him petty and argue with him.

"Oh I'm sorry I must have forgot them" she apologised.

Exactly like any other employee. He hated it.

"Ok sit down. We're having a conversation" he stated.

"No" she quickly replied.

"Fine as your boss you're going to listen to me" Damon said with a little authority.

She simply nodded.

"Im here for you Clara. Whatever it is you can tell me. You know me and you know despite the fucked up stuff I have done, you know I'm on your side. So please whatever has caused this new attitude you can tell me. And don't tell me you're just tired, I know when you are tired you get snappy with me even more. Now you are just shutting me out"

Clara wanted to tell him but she didn't want to be weak. He was Damon Russo, businessman and mafia boss. She didn't want to be weak.

"I just want to take my work more seriously" she replied.

"Ok Clara"  he replied and dismissed her.

She was lying. He knew something had happened. And from what he knew about Jake's behaviour recently, he knew Jake must have said something else.

When she left for lunch, he decided to check the camera's. He wanted to make sure Jake was treating her properly.

He was being too nice that it seemed suspicious. He felt creepy watching and Emilia's words echoed in his mind. Stalker.

He was in a coma most of the time but he remembered how Emilia became withdrawn when Luca started abusing her. But this was different, this was Clara and he knew she could handle herself.

That didn't stop him from going down to the cafeteria where he saw the couple sitting. Anyone looking would see how happy they looked but he could see Clara was faking happiness.

"Just the person I wanted to see . You have several files left unfinished. Take your lunch and go back to your office" he told her after approaching them.

"She's entitled to a lunch break, it's the law" Jake said.

Damon really didn't like Jake. He wanted to punch him but he couldn't be seen punching a employee.

"I'll give her a break later don't worrry"

Clara didn't hesitate to leave. And Damon followed her up.
