The prison was oddly dark today. The clouds covered the sky deeply, like smog preventing the sunlight that would grace them almost daily. However, the sky was not happy with them, keeping itself hidden.
Mostly everyone was sitting around, minding their own business as they waited to go back inside. Earth was lying on his belly, his head buried in his arms, and his legs stretched out with his tail being cradled in between. On his back, Clubbox and Hyehehe had gotten a hold of a chess board, but since they didn't know how to play it, they were playing in their own way, like a mix of checkers and how they thought it was played.
Rare Clavavera was at a table, talking with Rare Riff, Reedling, Rlamble, and a furcorn at a table, each of them taking turns on telling their own stories to pass the time. Well, that was until they were violently startled by the sound of a whistle, catching everyone's attention like a whip. Earth jumped at the sudden sound, the chess board nearly flying off him in the split-second of panic.
"EVERYONE LISTEN UP!" A rare pango–covered in scars and bite marks–yelled out. "WE'VE GOTTEN ORDERS FROM HIGHER-UPS, AND YOU ALL NEED TO CUT THOSE TREES DOWN!" He ordered, his shouts being heard clearly throughout the whole court-yard.The other prisoners around were a bit confused at the request, but didn't try to argue back. They all got up from where they were, starting to group up near where Earth was. But before Earth could sit back up, Hyehehe stood onto Earth's back, calling out to the forming group. "Alright, everyone! You heard the chief! We gotta cut the trees down! Any ideas on how to?"
Rare Clamble raised their claws. "We could hit our heads against it until they bust down."
"Ok, do we have any ideas from someone who isn't a complete idiot?"
"We could use the old tribal method." Rare Clavavera suggested, bringing her hand up to suggest. "By that, I mean we start a controlled fire at the base of the tree, and the fire will act as if we are cutting it. Though it might take a while, we can have other clawed monsters scratch at it to get a head start."
"That's great, but how do we start a fire? Nobody here has fire-power, or a microscope, and the sun isn't out either."
"Don't we have a kayna in this prison? We could ask the guards to go get them, and they could start the fire for us."
"Hm, that could work, but I'm not entirely sure if they'll be inclined to just do that. How do we get them to do so?"
"Send Reedling out to ask. They are the cutest here, they could have some pity-points."
"That's a great idea! Reedling, why don't you go ask?"
The Reedling smiled, and nodded their head quickly. Then, they turned to rush off to the court-yard door, their big paws making a gentle thump against the ground.
"Now, Clavaver, would you mind being the director of this event?""I could be the advisor, I'll work, but don't count on me to tell everyone what to do. And besides, you were the one to rally up."
"Hey, could I be the one that climbs the trees and breaks the sticks?" Clubbox turned to Hyehehe to ask with a slight smile.
"Why do you need to do that?"
"Well, other than maybe my huge size breaking the tree down as I go up, but it has a cleaner cut when we make it into something! Or if not us, for whoever the prison will take it to."
"Hm. Sure then, you can go right ahead." Hyehehe nodded, then turned to everyone else. "If there's a specific job you want, you can talk to me about it! And before you ask, Earth is the slack-off-er!"
"What!" Earth hissed, reaching his hand up to grab onto Hyehehe from behind, and tossing him over, then getting onto his knees to face him with a growl. "But I don't wanna be the slack-off-er!" He whined.
"Ok ok, then you can be the selective helper...Rara, you're the slack-off-er!"
"Yes!" Rare Riff cheered. "Later losers!" He then turned and walked off, gliding under a table to begin napping because he didn't have to work an ounce.
Earth stood up to his feet once more, easily towering over the other monsters around him."Earth, come here!" Clubbox called out to him, his claws already sinking into the bark of one tree as he began to climb it.
"What is it?" Earth asked when he got close enough, his blue, plastic rattle-replacement stuttering behind him.
"I need you to watch me in case I fall! You're the only one who wouldn't be squished if I fell."
"Very flattering, thank you."
Clubbox used his big white paws, and thick, dark claws to grab onto the tree's main stem, his feet not entirely holding on, but pushing him up enough along the way, until he got to the first set of branches. Once he did, he stepped his whole weight into them, causing them to easily crack and snap under him, falling to the ground with a harsh thud. He would go on and do this the whole way up the tree, leaving piles of branches and leaves on the ground, until the tree looked more like a brown pillar stuck in the ground. Slowly but surely, he began to do this to every tree nearby, only having a few close calls on falling, never hitting the ground or needing much help, but he had pulled a few claws from climbing for so long.
And luckily, that Rare Kayna was able to come around, starting fires at trees that needed it, and they all began to slowly make each tree fall down, setting them in rows along the wall farthest from the court-yard door. It was nice having an open field again, the only downside being there were a bunch of stumps left, but those could be used as tables or seats if they needed to.———
