In The Sky

"Are you sure we're going the right way?" I ask Leon as we walk down a gravel path, hand in hand as the summer breeze whips my hair in my face. I reach up and brush it away as Leon chuckles, leading me further up the path until we come to a clearing that shows a massive field and a group of people in the distance, along with them is a giant hot air balloon.

"No way." I breathe out, eyes widening as I glance up at Leon, who looks overjoyed at my response. He nods, pulling me to his side as we walk.

"Yeah way." Leon replies playfully, swinging our hands as I speed up my pace to reach the group. Leon doesn't comment, he just keeps up with me until we reach the group. I stare up at the balloon and brown basket, the shadow hulks over the field as it floats a few meters above ground, and as much as I'm excited, I'm also a little nervous.

"It's all safe, trust me I wouldn't let you do anything dangerous." Leon assures me, silently sensing my hesitation. His words comfort me, so I nod and take a deep breath of fresh air. A man comes over, grinning as he checks our tickets (Leon has ours on his phone) then he begins the briefing, telling us the rules and how to make sure we're safe while in the sky.

"So, we'll be heading off into the sky in about ten minutes." The man smiles, then he goes off to check the balloon.

Leon walks over to a patch of wildflowers, picking one then he tucks it above my ear, then he leans down and kisses my forehead with such tender care. "So beautiful." He murmurs. I lift on my toes as my palms rest on his chest, then press my lips agasint his gently until our names are called.

The balloon still hovers, but there's now a stepladder in place to help us get up. The other people go first, then Leon gestures for me go climb up before him. I begin the ascent, with Leon's hand on the small of my back as I head up, then gripping the basket I climb on board and grip the sides, already feeling the sway from the wind. Leon's just behind me when the man closes the basket and locks it securely. "Why did the clouds try to cheer up the sky?" Leon whispers into my ear as the sound of the heater fires up behind us.

I bite my lip then shake my head. "I don't know?"

"Because it looked a little blue."

I laugh because that was a terrible joke, but it's made me feel a little less nervous now knowing Leon's okay and with me. Soon enough, the hot air balloon is reaching up and up, the field grows smaller as we reach a new distance, and I can even see the city in the far distance. The sky is a vibrant cerulean blue, and the fluffy clouds gently pass just above us. The views catch my breath as we head forwards, seeing all the colors of the world at once in different ways.

"Wow, that's one hell of a view." Leon breathes out, his hands hold the basket either side of me as he stands behind me, his chest to my back as his chin rests on my shoulder.

"Yeah, you chose a pretty good date." I whisper back in response, lulled by the peacefulness and tranquility of the experience. The balloon is fairly still considering it'd floating through the sky, and I almost fall into an amazed trance as I watch below and ahead, truly awed by it all.

"We should stay here forever." Leon lightly chuckles, lips pressing against my neck as I smile and turn a little to look at his relaxed face.

"Yeah?"

He hums in reply, closing his eyes as a small breeze blows his hair, the faint scent of summer on the wind. I watch Leon's face, from the slope of his nose to the sharpness of his jawline, this moment couldn't be more perfect.

"Wine anyone?"

Okay, so maybe it can.

Leon nods, gratefully taking two plastic glasses from the man, then he cheers against mine as we sip on the bubbly drink, the taste golden and perfect. We drink and watch as the sun begins to dip a little, casting an orange glow on everything, then we lower back into the field we arrived in, only to find there's numerous picnic blankets set out for us all. I almost tear up at the cuteness of it all.

Leon leads me to the furthest one away and pulls me between his legs as we sit, his arms wrapped around me as we cuddle and begin to eat the food provided, which includes cakes, sandwiches, savoury snacks and some lemoanade.

"I don't know how you're going to beat this date night next month." I say once the day is over, and Leon's once again intertwining our fingers together as we head back to the car.

"I'll find something, guess I've made it my life's mission to keep surprising you." Leon grins, making me swoon as he wraps an arm around my shoulders and kisses the side of my head.
