I cross my legs as I shuffle in my seat, my music playlist echoes around the empty lab as I type until my fingers cramp up. I narrow my eyes at the code on the screen, noticing a little flaw in it. I backtrack, fixing it as my brain works out the missing elements and possible outcome if I were to send this code to the little robot perched on my desk next to me. Its smiley face grins up at me from where I grabbed a sharpie and made it a little less intimidating. If my code works and I can get this robot to do what its supposed to there's a good chance it'll be sent to the military or beyond for usage. I sigh, wondering how I went from a doctor in neuroscience and robotic engineering to now working for the Defence of Advanced Research Projects Agency.
The beep to the lab door breaks my focus from my laptop, I glance up to see an unfamiliar dark haired man come waltzing in, eyes scanning the various shelves of electronics and parts then roaming to the multiple screens where my trial codes are running, checking the algorithms. I stare at him, unsure what to say since I don't usually get guests. I watch as his eyes narrow in confusion at my works, then finally he turns to me, face covering his uncertainty with a cheeky grin. I can tell already that he's going to bring my perfectly coordinated world into utter chaos.
"Hey, are you Dr. Y/L/N?" He asks, walking over as I nod silently. People have never been my thing, at least not the social part of it, I prefer the company of brains and logic. "Okay, good start, I actually need your help with something, and since we both work for the government you're the only one I can trust to help me, if you're up for the challenge?" He winks at me, then adjusts his suit as he perches on my desk. I snatch up my robot, holding it to my chest as my eyes narrow at him.
"And what if I'm not?" I ask, unimpressed with his swagger and false confidence. The man's face falls slightly as his eyes dart to the side, as if that wasn't the response he wanted.
"Then I guess we'll both go down for refusing to assist our country." He shrugs. I swallow, but the man just holds up that charming smile that's supposed to break the walls I've built up around me. I carefully set down my robot, then stand and give myself some distance from the presumably government official, or agent. I pace as I nod, looking to him every so often.
"What do you need?"
"Your help with a problem, but it's top secret and I need to know I can trust you?" He asks, tone suddenly serious as he sits up straighter. I pause in my tracks, head slowly turning to him at the implication that I'm already in way over my head. I lick my lips, music coming to a stop as the buzz and hum of the electronics and computers fills the silence. I could refuse, but like he said there's repercussions for denying the government anything, especially since they're my employers. I sigh, pinching my nose.
"Of course you can trust me...." I lead off, hoping he'll introduce himself. The man smiles softly, hopping off of my desk to hold out a hand.
"Leon. And you're Y/N." He replies. I arch a brow, taking his hand and shaking it.
"Thanks for the reminder. Now, what kind of problem requires the expertise of a robotic engineer? I don't handle coffee spills or deleting your search history." I smile, tilting my head as Leon chuckles and holds his hands up in a surrender.
"I wish it were that simple." He sighs, then he grabs his phone, passing it to me as he shows me a photo of what looks to be some kind of lab, a red and white logo decorate various surfaces with the name 'Umbrella'. I let my brows knit together as I zoom in, faintly seeing top secret files stacked on messy desks. I ignore the pool of blood on the floor. "This is an Umbrella facility, a top secret lab dedicated to bioweapon research, the company has already caused numerous outbreaks through the years-"
"Like Raccoon City?" I ask, then scold myself for knowing about it. Leon's brows lift as he nods, his face drops as he lets out a breath. I almost reach out to comfort him, but stop myself before I do.
