Hopeless But Still Romantic

I smile at the barista before turning around, narrowly avoiding splashing my drink over the hottest biker I've ever seen. My eyes widen as I take in his ocean blue eyes and his dark blonde hair, he looks like one of those handsome biker men on social media, not someone I'd see in real life this close. My brain doesn't function as his eyes roam my face, then by body not to subtlety. I blush, unused to the feeling of being checked out so blatantly, but I like it.

"Hi." I softly say a little breathlessly. His perfect lips quirk in amusement as he gently pulls on my arm so other customers can grab their orders, even his touch sends a jolt of electric thrumming through me. I step aside with him, still amazed that he hasn't wished me on my way yet.

"Hey." He finally replies, voice a little deep but somehow sexy. I gulp, embarrassed by how attracted I am to him already. Thankfully it seems like I'm not the only one though, because his eyes keep darting to my lips, and I think between us we've got a real bad case of the insta-lust. We stand there, unsure what to say next, until I notice the helmet dangling from his hand. I point to it, sipping my drink that I'd almost forgotten about.

"You ride?" I question, then mentally slap myself for being so dumb. He's literally wearing a leather jacket and some riding gloves, I can't imagine he's roller skating everywhere. The man nods, gesturing to his helmet, even the subtle way his hair shakes sends butterflies to my stomach.

"Yeah, I've done it for years now. I, uh, I don't suppose you want to ride with me for a while? Unless you've got places to be or just aren't into me." He nervously chuckles. I blink at him, drink still halfway from my lips. No way, he's asking me out? Me? I nod before I can think it through, but I'm pretty sure a serial killer wouldn't pick up his latest victim in such a busy place like this. The man leads me to his bike outside as I down my drink as fast as I can, listening to his introductions as well as giving my own. I learn his name is Leon, and he's not too much older than I am. We stand there in the sun and talk for a while, I'm so surprised at how easy it is to just keep the conversation going with him, then finally Leon teaches me how to get onto the bike. I'm nervous, but refuse to let my fears get in the way of this experience. After securing his helmet onto my head, forgoing his own safety, we climb onto his bike with my arms wrapped around him. He's muscled and feels perfect in front of me.

"Are you sure this is safe?" I ask as Leon starts up the engine. The bike rumbles to life as he turns and nods at me, giving me that warm smile I'm falling for.

"I promise I'm the most careful rider I know," He reassures, patting my leg, "but if you want to change your mind-"

"No! Let's go." I grin, buzzing with anticipation. Leon chuckles at my eagerness, then faces forwards. He's slow at first due to the traffic from the city, but then when we begin to venture out of the main city and to the outskirts he speeds up, checking over his shoulder to see if I'm okay with each higher number. I'm exhilarated, laughing and whooping as the scenery blurs. I press my cheek closer to Leon's back, only to have the helmet get in the way, but regardless it feels nice. We enjoy the speed and the freedom right until we reach a massive traffic jam on one of the back roads. Leon balances the bike as I frown, peeking over his shoulder. "What's going on?" I ask.

Leon shakes his head, until I hear it. A series of 'moo's. I let out a small laugh as Leon edges the bike further down the line, fitting in between the cars until we finally see what's holding up the traffic. There's a herd of cows blocking the road, all content with strolling across the concrete. I bite my lip, trying to contain a giggle at this ridiculous situation but it's too late, as soon as I start laughing Leon follows, both of us gripping each other as we wait for the nearest farmer to come sort the situation out. Leon tries to turn the bike around, but there's a warning that any loud noises could startle them, so we're forced to stay put. We spend the forty-five minutes talking, getting to know each other some more, and I soon find that Leon isn't the intimidatingly cool biker I assumed, instead he's a softie with a hilariously terrible sense of humour.

Eventually it gets dark, and by the time the cows are gone so is the sun, so Leon takes me home, dropping me off outside of my house. "Can I get your number? Maybe we could retry this date thing tomorrow?" Leon suggests as he leans against his bike, tilting his head in hopes that I'll agree. I do, we exchange numbers and the next day Leon picks me up in the afternoon, both of us getting back on the bike I'm growing to love. This time Leon brought a spare helmet, so we're both safe to weave around traffic and risk it a little more until we continue down the same roads as yesterday, but this time cow free. Leon puts on a playlist of his favourite songs as we discuss and bop our heads along to it, then finally Leon stops out of the city at a tulip field. It's gorgeous, and we walk hand in hand through the rows, it's so romantic and original.

"Let's take some photos?" I suggest. Leon nods, wrapping an arm around my shoulders as he takes my phone and holds it up, but every time he takes a selfie his thumb gets in the way, so eventually I take the lead, pulling him down to my height as we laugh and smile for the camera- and each other. As some time passes Leon sucks in a breath, turning to me with a wince.

"I just remembered something..." He mumbles, tugging on his backpack and pulling out some comically flattened sandwiches. I take one from him anyway, nibbling on it as we find a place to sit. It's cute how he put an effort into making these for us instead of taking me to a restaurant, though this date has once again had its moments, it's still so heart-warming. We talk more and eventually end up kissing (Leon took the lead as he cupped my neck and pulled me in, hesitantly pressing his lips to mine as the tulips surrounded us and the sun casted an orange glow in the sky) then get back on the bike as a couple. Feeling more comfortable with each other we sing karaoke and tickle each other at the red lights, as well as bonking helmets together as his hand rests on my thigh. When he drops me off again and kisses me once more, this time a little more heatedly, he pulls away, rubbing the back of his neck as he holds his helmet.

"I'm sorry I was a little hopeless with the date-"

I press my finger to his lips, then smile. "I know not everything went to plan, but you're romantic and cute, it's sweet." Leon blushes but grins, then I go in for another kiss, but his helmet gets in the way, stopping me from meeting his mouth with my own. Leon curses, looking embarrassed as he moves it, then his arm snakes around my back and kisses the butterflies away, seeing them free as they're replaced with a warm glow of love.
