Linwan patted the blanket covered floor in front of her couch. "I think that's everything?" Her mentor hummed as he though then looked at the small boxes that the girl had placed on the small coffee table earlier. "What about those?" "Hm? Oh! Those are noise cancelling headphones. I got them for both of us, since I figured the fireworks would suck big time." He blinked at her with a blank expression then snickered. "They're not that bad for me." "Right 'cause of the, uh, dampening magic?" "Yep. But you're definitely going to need those. It is your first year with this type of hearing." She nodded softly as she opened her box. "So, I take it you won't want yours?" "Well, I never said that." He took the time to open his little gift from the girl as she put hers on. She paused for a moment then spoke lowly, just to be sure she didn't yell. "Woah, these are pretty good. I can barely hear myself with them on." She smirked at Macaque who rolled his eyes jokingly before he sat next to her and put his on, but took them off a moment after. "Uncomfortable?" He looked at her then shrugged slightly as she slowly took her own off. "You want to explain why you chose out here and not in your clearly closed off room? It's way quieter in there." "Well, I still wanted to watch them." She pointed to the open curtains then jabbed a thumb towards the kitchen. "Plus this is kitchen adjacent." He nodded a bit. "True. So, when are the fireworks starting?" She glanced at her phone then put it back down. "Few minutes." "Alright then." He threw a blanket over her and positioned it above her head, earning a confused look from the girl. "Trust me, you'll want this here." She simply nodded as she put her headphones back on with Macaque following suit. It didn't take much longer before the fireworks started. She was about to give a small "Happy New Year" to the monkey next to her, but ended up writhing when the sound of the firework went off. "Fuck!" A moment of silence happened before another pop was heard and she whined. 'These headphones are worthless!' She ended up ripping them off and putting her hands to her ears instead. With this she could, at least, press her hands into her skull and focus on her own beating heart. She didn't even seem to notice her mentor rubbing soothing circles into her back through every tremble and wince, but she did notice him slowly joining her in the blankets to slowly replace her hands with his own from behind. She knew she had dug into the back of her ears a bit, so she let him, but that just led to her clinging onto his hands as she tried to watch the colorful show through dazed eyes and ringing ears.

At some point, Macaque had used some of his magic to dampen her hearing, though he had to continuously do so due to her just not being able to hold it herself at the moment. Every now and then, there'd be a pop or a small 'boom' from the fireworks and the girl would flinch or twitch but she eventually calmed down and simply stared while fully leaning back into him. She had gotten into the rhythm of the fireworks going off and would prepare for them moments before they'd pop but... then it suddenly stopped. She worked her way through the final haze of pain as the monkey gave a small hum. "They stopped?" She whispered lowly and Macaque simply nodded from over her shoulder. "That's... not right." She gently shook his hands off of her ears then put her own hands there and groaned slightly at the world's noises suddenly coming back to her. It took a moment, but she heard it and froze: screams from below. She stood up and Macaque followed as he removed his own headphones, only giving a sharp inhale as he experienced the world again. "The hell is all that screaming?" "It's gotta be why the fireworks stopped." "Why don't we-" The monkey's suggestion was cut off by the window breaking and a small spider-themed robot that pounced on Linwan, getting a squeak from her before she tried to hold it back. "THE HELL IS THIS THING?!" Macaque quickly kicked it away from her and sent it back where it came in, then grabbed her and got them through one of his portals.
