The moment has arrived... Honestly, I think this is my favorite chapter, I'm super proud of it 🥺Has it all been just to get here? Maybe, but the ride is what matters and we're like half-way 😅 (a bit more, really)

Triggers for this chapter: death, blood, gun violence, wild animal attack, and lots of anxiety.

(Disclaimer: in real life, fuel tanks do not explode with bullets, it is a known Hollywood/videogame mechanic to make things sensational. I thought of writing it out, but I like explosions and drama 🤷)

They drove a bit more up the road until suddenly something came into view after a curve. Leah observed their surroundings attentively while Jungkook stopped the car on the right side of the road that was by a river. That river went down south, where it curved to a spot where a camp could be seen. In front of them, the road split into two: one way going inside said camp through a make-believe gate, and another turning northeast.

They got out of the car quietly and picked up their backpacks and weapons. That area had fewer trees and more bushes all around, proof of human interference. As they crossed the road and walked uphill hiddenly between the vegetation to get a view of the camp, they saw the cut tree logs piled all over. There was machinery to cut the wood there and near the water, many logs were disposed of and ready to be loaded onto boats along with crates and other goods.

They crouched atop the hill overseeing the camp and used a bush to hide themselves as Leah pulled out her sniper and used the scope to observe.

It looked more like a lumber mill than an important armory, she thought. There were various shacks spread out in the space and going up that hill beside the river. The camp was delimited by tall wooden fences probably to keep animals out, not people. She spotted five men in multiple entry points, then she scooted over to the side to let Jungkook see as well.

While he did, she observed the area around them. They had a good view, but not the best. She wanted a better place.

"I count five," Jungkook whispered, still observing.

"Me too," she breathed.

"I'm surprised there's so many already awake, it's barely morning yet."

"I'm not, they're guarding the entrances. There should be more," she answered and then tapped his shoulder. "See that abandoned shack there? Let's go there, we'll get a better angle."

She was grabbing her sniper rifle when he stopped her, "How will we get there without being seen?"

She glanced again at the place, then at him, "By staying low. Follow me."

She put the weapon on her back and advanced while crouched. Indeed, to get to the advantage point she wanted, they had to go down the hill, passing immediately next to the wood fence, and then climb up the hill again, a naked hill with only low bushes. Jungkook was trying not to think about it too much as they climbed with their backs turned on the camp where a man was standing at the entry while talking to another.

She turned to use the crumbled wall of the shack as cover, giving him space to be next to her. The place looked like it would fall apart at any moment, it no longer had doors or windows, but she deemed it safe enough. Through the other entrance, the view was even better and although the position was easily spotted, for now, it was their best option.

She placed her sniper on the floor, pulling down the tripod legs so it could stand on its own, and tried scoping the place again. Bingo.

Five men guarded each passage, and another four were busy doing other things: two working on cars and the other two just chatting, one of which was close to them. She observed for a bit more until she gave him his turn again.
