Leah woke up with a startle and rolled belly up, relaxing once she felt the bed under her and the ceiling above her head. That was their bedroom, she was safe, and the neck pain was because of all the stress and sleepless nights.
She felt the bed to her sides and frowned; the emptiness had her raising her head to check that indeed she was alone in bed. She let her head fall back to the pillow and sighed. Right, he wasn’t there. He was back at the clinic with his friend, waiting for him to wake up.
She reviewed their last conversation in her head with a heavy heart — she was right to draw the line. It was where it hurt her, where she couldn’t allow their relationship to go. She hoped he understood and didn’t misunderstand. She didn’t want to push him away, she missed him. She turned to the side where he would sleep next to her, holding her tightly, and the sadness expanded in her heart. She wanted to see him.
She got up and put clothes on in a hurry. Looking out of the window, it seemed like the sun was setting. Did she sleep the whole day?
She made her way to the clinic and just nodded at the staff there with whom she was acquainted until she got to the right room. She would have knocked on the ajar door but she was afraid of waking Jungkook up, seeing that there was silence.
But he turned back to look at her the second the door moved, and she was instantly worried. “Hey.”
“Hey,” he whispered, his eyes still on her as she closed the door behind her.
“Did you sleep?”
“I did,” he pressed the back of his neck to ease the discomfort, and she frowned ever so slightly.
She neared the bed, “Did he react?”
“No, but Ella checked on him twice. She says he’s stable, he’s just sleeping.”
“He looks like he needs it,” she murmured, seeing the hollow cheeks, dark circles, and greyish skin tone on his friend’s face. She looked at Jungkook again; seeing his friend like that couldn’t be easy. “But this is good news. He’s going to be okay.”
He gave her a firm nod, “I know, thank you.”
He pressed his lips and tried not to stare at her. He knew what she was doing, being there for him as usual, but he wasn’t sure of where they stood. If he even deserved it. He promised to be better and it wasn’t working out. If he wasn’t good to her, then he had no confidence to stand by her side even if he wanted to. Even if he wanted nothing else in this world.
He jumped when he felt her hands brushing his shoulders lightly until they met in the middle, at the end of his nape, and pressed gently. He instantly relaxed back into the chair, into her, and closed his eyes.
“You’re as stiff as a rock, holy shit,” she frowned deeply, pressing her fingertips as hard as she could into his flesh.
He only hummed, “That feels good.”
Her lips curved as she kept trying to relax him despite the tension hardening his muscles. She focused on his neck and was happy when he groaned a sigh, enjoying her massage thoroughly. So when he reached to stop her hands and turned to look at her, she was surprised.
“Thank you. You don’t have to do that.”
He was holding her hands over his shoulder and looking at them with sadness, and she squeezed his hand. “But I want to.”
He closed his eyes for a moment, then shook his head, “I don’t deserve it.”
“I’m not punishing you.”
“I know,” he looked up at her. “I am.”
She sighed and sat on his lap with her legs hanging to the side. His eyes widened but he didn’t let go of her hands.
