"you want me...to teach you...how to handle a sword?"

[name] nods once as zoro repeats her request from earlier, as if what she had said sounded so odd that the swordsman had to say the words on his tongue to check if it was even his language.

seated at the crow's nest where zoro had begun his morning workout, he was already having an eventful morning, and it got even more interesting by the words that came out of her mouth.

"...why?"

"...there will be a time when my strength will fall short." she looked up at him after staring at the ground, "and i want to protect everyone with every last bit of my strength."

zoro didn't find that odd; she was kind of right. using your fist was more troublesome than using a sword, and she looked like the kind of person who could be multitalented because she had no nature to complain and rather spoke with her actions.

and she seemed pretty determined.

he found no harm in it. dropping the weights and walking over to the side, he grabbed a wooden sword that he found here thanks to franky, "i'm no lenient teacher."

[name] didn't need to be told twice, grabbing the wooden sword hat he tossed to her. "i'll do as much as i can."

"that's what i like to hear."

for the rest of the morning, the two of them continued with their swordsmanship training. like he had said, zoro was no lenient teacher; she was a good student as well. because she was already familiar with the agility that a swordsman needed thanks to her martial arts training, she was able to understand much of what he told her, and got to it immediately. she also applied what she'd learned by observing yuri in her fights.

but the one thing he told her to focus on was her versatility, the ability to constantly shift from an offensive move to a defensive move with ease.

"stand with your feet shoulder's width apart, and are you left-handed or right-handed?"

she raised her left hand and wiggled her fingers, but zoro already knew what she meant (big brother knew his little sister alright), "right huh? step forward a bit with your corresponding foot. it strengthens your posture by giving you a larger center of gravity.

"now, you're gonna practice holding the blade in front of you. it'll make your upper-arms ache a bit, but you don't know how long you're going to need your blade out for, so it's good to be prepared."
