Hotaru is very interested in Kanato Sakamaki, when she was about 12 in human years she ran away from the Mukami House and ran to the Sakamaki house. They took her in and she became very close with Shu and Kanato, and treated them like her elder brothers instead of her actual brother and the others at the Makami household. The Sakamaki brother's mom didn't care much for her, and didn't pay much attention to poor Hotaru, but it was better then being abused by her pretend family. (Except for Ruki)
