A few weeks have passed since Kane and his father exploded to pieces.
Orion and I have been adjusting back to our old routines. He's back in school and playing soccer again. In the meantime, I've been at home resting and waiting to heal a little more before making a temporary return to my job while I begin the process of transferring and opening up my own clinic.
I still find it hard to comprehend that Kane is dead. I believe the reason it is difficult for me to comprehend is because it happened so quickly, and I didn't physically watch him die. He is dead but I still feel that something is off. There is just something that doesn't let me be at peace yet. I'm not sure what it is but I do know that Kane's mother and sister are alive and free. It wouldn't surprise me if they suddenly tried something, especially after learning that I was partially behind Kane's death.
The sound of soft footsteps grabs my attention.
"Ms. Catalina, here's your mail." One of the housekeepers delivers me a thin stack of white envelopes when she enters the living room.
"Thank you." I give her a small smile as I set my tea down. She excuses herself and then I look through the envelopes.
It's all bills and notifications up until the last envelope.
It's blank, and I get a sick feeling down my spine from déjà vu. Setting the others aside, I open the envelope quickly. Inside is a folded piece of paper that I also rapidly open to read.
The writing is unfamiliar, so I know that Kane hasn't suddenly come back from the dead.
I'm going to make sure that you die, bitch. I'm going to make you regret killing my brother and father. You're a fucking ungrateful whore and I'm going to make you suffer to the point where you will beg me to end your pathetic and useless life.
It takes me only two sentences to realize that it's a sweet letter from Karla. I crumble the letter completely, and I throw it beside me on the couch. It all happens subconsciously when I reach for my phone and start calling Silas who answers right away.
"Doctor, missed me so soon?" He's smiling, I can hear it in his voice.
I roll my eyes, a stupid grin already on my face.
I play along. "Sorry, I couldn't help it."
"Don't worry you'll see me later, but I don't want you complaining when you get tired of seeing my gorgeous face so regularly." He's very serious about that.
"I could never get tired of you." I genuinely mean it, but he doesn't need to know that.
He chuckles, the sound sending warmth throughout my body. It's an explosion of something hot but sweet that only he can make me feel.
"What can I help you with?" His voice is less teasing and much softer.
I decide to tease him back. "I can't just call you because I want to?"
